Don't immediately go for a sports drink. They are mostly sugar, and the sudden inflow of sugar to a dehydrated sytem could lead to "sugar shock" instead go for water, or if you are worried about the "extra's" you get from sports drinks, dilute it with 1/2 water first.
But this is only after you have passed into exhaustion. But I do advise drinking only water, those sports drinks are a waste.

I know what you mean about dehydration, my girlfriend went all sick on me walking around the parks. We sat her down in an air-conditioned cafe with some water.
I think the key is to drink little and often. My little sister gave us a fright in Las Vegas a while back by blacking out in a Casino, too much walking in 100 degrees.

I had heat stroke once .. was at Lake Michigan and it was HOT and SUNNY ... and was out too long and not drinking water. On the way back to the car, I just stopped ... all I wanted to do was lay down and sleep! Probably a good thing I didn't ....
Desparately needed water ... now I make sure that I always wear a hat when I'm out like that ... and drink lots and lots of water.

I suffered from heat exhaustion when I was about 15 at WDW right in front of Space Mountain. My mom, a nurse for 30 years, insisted that I drink water AND orange juice. Orange juice has natural sugars and vitamin C that can help you rebound faster and more naturally.
I actually stay away from those sports drinks. Not only do they taste gross ( http://www.intercot.com/boards/pukey.gif ) I read the labels - look at how much sugar is in that stuff!!! Once in a while, when I want a sweet drink, I just go for a Coke - at least I know it is bad for me. http://www.intercot.com/boards/wink.gif

I advise checking with your family doctor about those drinks.
I am a water lover... I drink it all the time. But when I told my doctor I was going to WDW in June, he told me to be sure I drank LOTS of Gatorade. http://www.intercot.com/boards/pukey.gif
I have high blood pressure (and am on medication) and he said it was important for me to replace electrolytes, and I should ignore the yucky taste and sugar content.
So, each person may get a different recommendation...
but the important thing is ALWAYS- KEEP HYDRATED!!

Emt training states if someone is suffering from Heat exhaustion, immediately seek a cooler shelter. Fans are also a good idea.

This isn't readily available in WDW as far as I know, but there are 2 sports drinks out there that I highly recommend.
The first is Propel. It's made by the Gatorade people, but it isn't as thick, sugary and/or salty. When I particpate in local runs (I'm training for the Disney 1/2 Marathon), they always have this stuff at the end. It's only about 10 calories a bottle, as opposed to the 200 or so calories in Gatorade.
The other is Fruit-2-O by Veryfine. It's just filtered water with slight flavoring. It doesn't have any electrolytes in it, but it's better tasting than plain water, IMO. I love water, but sometimes I just want flavor.

You know, I was in Epcot in the morning in 1997 when all of the sudden I started feeling VERY lightheaded, tired, and ill. I thought it was food poisoning all this time, but, now after reading all of this, I realize I was probably dehydrated or feeling heat exhaustion. I could hardly walk! I had to sit down on a bench for a while and struggled to keep my eyes open. Eventually I walked back to our hotel (Yacht Club, which we checked into that day) and just went to sleep. I felt HORRIBLE! It especially stunk because we bought e-night tickets for that night and I could not go. http://www.intercot.com/boards/blue.gif

I have my kids (and even dh after so many years) properly brainwashed into thinking that water is the best drink for you and it truly is the only thing that will quench a thirst. That is all I ever drink, except for an occsional soda.

When my dad passed out at MK a couple of weeks ago and they took him to first aid, the nurse had him lay down in the AC http://www.intercot.com/boards/smile.gif and take small sips of powerade. She said it is very improtant to replace the electrolytes when you are dehydrated.
