Becoming a Local-sort of-random questions

Wasn't sure where to post this. We have just purchased a lot/home package in Deland. About about hour plus to WDW. Close enough for me and far enough away for hubby lol. We are keeping it on the down low for now until we notify our customers we are closing our business.

My question is this, I know sometimes we (I) will want to go for day trips but sometimes I know we will want to stay overnight. How hard is it to get semi reasonable (I know it's Disney) accommodations fairly last minute for 1-2 nights? Can you ever get DVC rentals at the last minute when it's a short stay. I know ideally we would book something 60 days out but I also know that sometimes we won't know my new work schedule etc.

Thoughts?

When we used to fly in to visit a couple/few times a year, we would typically book 1 bedroom vacation units. Now that we live in Florida, we typically book shorter stays (3 or 4 nights) and usually in a studio. When I've looked at last minute availability, I typically have not found any studios in the last minute category but will often find a couple/few nights in larger units. Even if I'm only booking a few nights, I will usually book around 7 nights out and, even then, ability is often limited.

I have a vacation home in Celebration, but like to stay on site for a night or 2 to get the full Disney experience. I am a DVC member and will sometimes look about 2 weeks out, being so close I focus on the MK DVC resorts because MK is what I find to be most a pain to drive to. But I've definitely seen some availability for the odd night or two at Saratoga Springs and OKW. The Swan/Dolphin are also good options, as well as the All-Stars.
