I would stay on the DTD side, near/on 535. It's close and clean. The Courtyard on Palm Pkwy is great, we stay there a lot. The Holiday Inn Express across the street is nice too.

The zoo is fun, enough to fill the entire day. The Seaquarium is ok, but kind of expensive. Everglades Alligator Farm in Homestead is cool, and going to the main Everglades park entrance too. Like...

DH and I did the tour last year and loved it. I got to release the lady bugs :) along with a mom and her 10ish yo son. It was definitely worth it and we'll probably do it again.
