    Default Acid Reflux?

    Hey hey everyone.

As I'm sure most of you know, it's never too early to start planning your next trip, even if you haven't booked yet... Anyway, I'm hoping to go back in Jan 2012 for my birthday again and I'll be bringing another friend along with me. While in college, she suddently developed extremely severe acid reflux and a few other gastro problems that are still, a few years later, undiagnosed. She somewhat follows a gluten-free diet, which helps a little, but she is EXTREMELY sensitive to onions, red sauces, tomatoes...etc.

When making reservations, I'm going to notate gluten free, so she has that option, but can she also be accomodated with the acid reflux? Am I crazy for even putting that on the reservation?

    Any thoughts/comments are appreciated!

I don't know how they are about requesting a special diet, but I also suffer with acid reflux and I ate the regular food. I would take a PPI such as Prevacid in the morning, and then at dinner time I'd take a Pepcid, then before bed I'd drink some Gaviscon and elevate my head with extra pillows (this is a way of life unfortunately!) and I was fine.

Another suggestion is you can research the menus before you book your ressies and find places with meals that will work best for her. We do that anyway before deciding where we want to eat.

Good luck and have a great trip!

I don't think it would hurt to have the acid reflux listed on your reservations, but I don't know if they would really be able to do too much to help. I know that Disney is great about accommodating guests with special diet needs, though, so they might be able to. But, with acid reflux, it's really different for different people, meaning that some foods can trigger it in some while other foods will trigger it in others. I have acid reflux and I have to avoid anything that has mint and I can't drink soda or coffee or I will be suffering! But, I have no problem with mildly spicy food, fried food, or things like onions or tomatoes, all of which can be common triggers. I work with a woman who can't even have an onion touch her food or she will really have a flare up!

Is your friend on any kind of medicine for her acid reflux? If not, she really should try something like the PP said. I started off taking Nexium and it really, really helped me. Then, when Prevacid went over the counter, I switched to that and have had very few flare ups since. Something that also helped me when I was first diagnosed was drinking Aloe juice. (You can get it at any health food store, and I think they even have it at Walgreens.) It's pretty gross, but it did help me. I only drink it now if I get a bad flare up that doesn't go away quickly with OTC meds.

I hope that whatever happens, you both are able to have a great trip with lots of great meals!

Your best bet might be to ask to talk to the chef at the restaurant when you order to see about options.

I would note the gluten free requirement on your ADRs as well as "allergies," and then ask to talk to the chef who will be able to make something to meet her needs.

I don't think I'd add the acid reflux on the reservations. As the PP have stated this is something that is individual to each of us who suffers with this. If there are things like onions that might be hard to know if they were in a reciepe I'd list them as allergies.

This is more of something that your friend will have to manage on her own. Acid reflux has some "universal" triggers, and if your friend is aware of hers, it should be no harder for her to avoid them than it is while she dines out at home.

For almost the past year, I dealt with some awful acid reflux. Turns out, it was gallbladder problems. I had my gallbladder removed 2 weeks ago, and the heartburn/reflux is totally gone! No foods cause me any discomfort anymore. While I was dealing with it, though, it seemed like everything caused reflux, so I just dealt with it using OTC meds and Rolaids.
