You just missed them. There were real mermaids at the Media Event for the opening of the new DLH pool area. Or, so I heard.

I loved this podcast! Very funny. Gary, I laughed pretty hard when you made that Fire and Math comment. I appreciate that kind of quick humor.

As for the monorail debate, I am sort of in the middle. I agree with both sides, to an extent. However, the one thing that kept irritating me was John referring to the Contemporary, Polynesian, and Grand Floridian as monorail resorts. That is something that WE (i.e. the Disney Geek internet community) came up with. Disney does not refer to those as "Monorail Resorts". They are simply Disney Deluxe Magic Kingdom Area Resorts, and do not come with the promise of any specific transportation at all times. Similarly, the Epcot resorts do not promise boat transportation at all operating hours, and the boats shut down in lightning storms and other bad weather. So, really, nothing specific is promised to ANY resort beyond "Disney transportation". I think, considering the monorail accident that happened, it is reasonable for Disney to cease monorail operations so late at night, when fatigue can contribute to operation errors. And, to be completely honest, 3am is a ridiculous time to even be in a theme park, and I think you are both crazy.

Can't wait for the next podcast guys! Keep up the good work.

Oh, and I also thought Michael did a great job. Very funny! Loved the little jokes slipped in now and then.

Great episode, folks! A couple of things, though-
    • Boyz to Men- No one could sing "Motown Philly" without Ian present?
    • Did not one of you know a song by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy? Zoot Suit Riot or You and Me and the Bottle Makes 3? Of course, a gin and tonic sounds mighty, mighty good to me .

Okay so ... got an opportunity to hear "The Great Monorail Debate of 2011" this morning while I was at the gym and since my name was taken in vain so many times during the segment (yeah I'm lookin' at you, O'Brien! ) I felt the need to weigh in ...

You guys dramatically overestimated my interest in this topic.

Ultimately, I agree a lot more with Gary than I do with John. It just doesn't affect me, so I really don't care. First off, how many times in a year is the Magic Kingdom open until 3AM? Maybe once a week for four months total out of a year? So sixteen nights out of an entire year people are inconvenienced? Eh ... not going to get all in a twist about something with such a low occurance.

Also, I mean come on ... I have four little kids. When am I ever going to be in the Magic Kingdom even at midnight let alone 3AM for heaven's sake???

And even if I was and I was at a monorail resort, I'd be at BLT since we own there and I could walk home in like 5 minutes.

All that being said, from a debate standpoint it was no contest ... John's arguments blew Gary's away. Gary's point of view was borderline nonsensical as he appeared to be somehow trying to rationalize it by linking the fact that the Magic Kingdom was open until 3AM in the first place with the fact that Deluxe resorts guests shouldn't care about this change.

Gary ... news flash ... Magic Kingdom is open until 3AM for all Walt Disney World Resort guests, not just those staying at a Deluxe resort! So, at the end of the day, John was exactly right in that everyone else staying at a moderate or a value resort is losing absolutely nothing while the guests paying beaucoup bucks for a deluxe are losing out with no corresponding reduction in the room rate.

Gary, I think you had the winning side of the debate and you just fumbled it away with incoherent ramblings. Not that this is unusual.

No, I kid Gary ... I do really agree with you.

I will say, though, that the notion that people are paying all that extra money for a deluxe resort for the "bigger rooms" and the "better service" is just plain silly. At the end of the day a deluxe room at a monorail resort is typically about four times more expensive than the average room at a value resort and trust me ... the rooms ain't four times bigger, the service ain't four times better (in fact sometimes it's four times worse!), and the amenities ain't four times as good. The people paying $450 a night and up for a room at the Contemporary are paying it for the same thing that drives the price of real estate in any other market ... location, location, location.

On an unrelated note, I really enjoyed hearing Michael on the podcast!! He was great ... can't wait to get back to it and hear his take on the Best of Disneyland segment!

    Cool

Ian says that now but given whatever side will stir the pot more on a given topic - he could have argued from either side.

Why is this a John versus Gary thing? Because we disagreed on something? Isn't that kind of the point of having a round table? If we all agreed all the time how boring would that be?

Pretty boring... I quite enjoyed the back and forth and think it made for good listening, and certainly has spurred conversation.

Great episode! A little healthy debate is good! I just took the time to listen to the podcasts for the first time this week so I'm going to have to backtrack and get caught up.

I'm with Ian. The monorail thing doesn't effect me because I will never shut down the park. It's silly to me that EMH even offers the opportunity to stay until 3am.

I do see both sides though. Certainly you pay more to be on the monorail loop, but in the grand scheme of things you still have your monorail option the majority of the time. I'd be interested to hear how many people really stay late? I've always assumed it was a small number and if that's the case it seems wasteful to run the monorail for a few people who could easily take another mode of transportation.

    Default Dunkin Donuts

The issue with Dunkin not being in Disney would be that they have a contract with Pepsi and Disney has the uber contract with Coke. There is only one Dunkin that I know of that is in a Coke location and that is hidden way in the back at the Mohegan Sun Casino. Also Nescafe is a Coca Cola food product so it would also be a competing product to a current major sponsor

I'll also chime in on this monorail debate. EMH's are a perk of staying on property, and the monorail access is a perk of staying at those resorts, therefore it should be available. It is an inherent incentive to pay top dollar that is being taken away, even if it Is once a week. I wonder is this will continue through the halloween and christmas parties, they start after regular park closing.........

    Good show as usual.

Great monorail debate...I hope you've since seen that it is for maintainance, and your twice per week, using a different mode of Disney transportation, twice, won't ruin your experience.

Reportedly, the maintainance is on the track, not the cars. Less cars on the tracj wouldn't work.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're NOT out to get you!
