Actually Disney and James Cameron have collaborated in the past- first with Ghosts of the Abyss - an IMAX 3D documentary that revisited the Titanic site in 2003 and Aliens of the Deep - another IMAX 3D documentary in 2005.

Ghosts of the Abyss relates to Avatar since it was the first film shot with an early prototype of the Cameron/Pace Fusion 3D camera rig.

Vincent Pace is an underwater camera specialist (worked on Titanic and The Abyss) who Cameron brought along on several dive trips and sought his input on building a new type of 3D camera with the eventual goal of filming Avatar with the camera but used Ghosts as a test (and also to help fund the camera's development).

For anyone who is bothered by the idea of an AVATAR attraction at a Disney theme park, they can simply choose not to visit the attraction. Simple. The rest of us can decide for ourselves if it's worth a second or multiple visits.
    ^^ That.

I'm not opposed to Avatarland but please, Disney, don't get rid of The Festival of the Lion King. Relocate if you must but don't remove, IMHO, the best live show at WDW. I hope this is just a rumor.

This was my initial impression. I was so disappointed to hear about an Avatar land. As many have already said, yes, it was a visually interesting movie. But the plot was tired and old. And basing a theme park area on ONE movie? At least Harry Potter is based on seven books/movies.

One mediocre movie does not a theme park make.

    James Cameron visits Disneyland

    From Disney Parks Blog:

On Friday, legendary film director James Cameron and fellow Lightstorm Entertainment production partner Jon Landau toured the Cars Land expansion site at Disney California Adventure park, accompanied by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs and a team from Walt Disney Imagineering.

While there are no immediate plans for an AVATAR-themed land at the “Happiest Place on Earth,” Cameron and Landau used the visit as inspiration and to further familiarize themselves with the immersive Disney Parks experience as their team begins design work on the first AVATAR-themed land set to open at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.

The team studied the details and storytelling elements in the 12-acre world of Radiator Springs that will open at Disney California Adventure park in summer 2012, before touring other parts of the Disneyland Resort.

Other than festival of the lion king, might as well place over camp Minnie Mickey.... we just can't see the point of anything else currently there... Pretty much a bunch of meet and greets
