    Default What do you remember?

The how to know you're growing older post got me to thinking.

When you got your driver's license what was the cost of gas per gallon?

What was the price of a can of Pepsi?

What was the price of a stamp?

What did a gallon of milk cost?

When I got my license, gas was 50 cents a gallon, Pepsi came in a bottle and was fifteen cents, milk was just under a dollar and stamps were six cents.

    The year was 1959-
    Gas was .25
    Stamp was.04
    Pepsi was .05
Milk was $1.01 (had to look this one up as Mom and Dad paid for the milk)
Also for teenager the important things included the cost of going to the movies was $1.00 or a dollar a car at the local drive-in.
And if you grew up in Southern California, Disneyland for a Junior "Big 10" ticket book was $3.00 and they had Date Night tickets with admission about 5 PM with fewer rides and lots of places to dance that ran about half price.
Going to the high school football and basketball games was free. The cost of going to the Sock Hop after the game was a quarter and yes, we did have to remove our shoes on the gym floor.
But the minimun wage was only $1.00 an hour and as a teenager that was all anyone ever paid you.

I'm too old to remember !! hahahaaa

I remember collecting bottles for return money !!

My first job was working in a grocery store where I had to work in a dark hallway with a conveyor belt full of cartons of empty soda bottles...my job was to place the right bottle in the matching carton, then stack them ceiling high for the truck to pick up !!

I don't remember the gas prices but I remember $10 or $15 dollars would keep me going all week !!

I remember when we bought our boat in '04 gas was about $1.49/gallon. Now it's easily a $300+ fill up and that's only 1 or 2 trips on the water.

    .32 a gal, but sometimes there'd be a price war at .25.

A bottle of Coke in a machine was .10.

    First class stamp was .05.

    Milk, no idea.

I really have no idea. I remember Pepsi in the vending machine being 50 cents maybe? I do remember drinking pop out of glass bottles but I was very small so I wasn't paying for it to know the price. Gas I do not recall or stamps. I do remember when the Poly was $215 per night. LOL. That was the first vacation I paid for as an adult.

Gas actually got cheaper a year or two after I got my license (1972). It was about 25 cents per gallon at first, but then we had a gas price war in our community while I was still in high school. The cheapest I remember paying was 19.9 cents per gal. for a few days. My best friend had a VW beetle, and we would scrounge our families' sofa cushions for spare change and cruise all weekend! But when the prices went back up they quickly went up to about 35 cents per gallon. We had to really cut back on our "cruising".

The least I can remember paying for a "coke" was 10 cents in the 10 oz. bottles. There were still a couple of vending machines in town at that price when I was 12-13 years old.

I can also remember my grandpa buying me Krystal burgers for 10 cents each when I was a kid. He thought it was terrible when they went up to 12 cents.

Don't remember the price of milk back then, but I do remember having it delivered to our house a couple of times per week by an actual "milkman". We got it in half gallon paper cartons.

I forgot about this hamburger place we'd go to when we lived in California (I was in jr high). We'd get hamburger, fries and a shake. I'm trying to remember the actual prices, like 25 cents for the burger, or maybe the shake was a quarter. Something was 19 cents. The whole thing was under 75 cents. This hamburger place seemed odd to me - it kept count of the number of burgers sold, and had golden arches. The only seating was outside.

I also remember the milkman bringing the milk, half and half, and orange juice too.
