Exclamation Rumour: Is the Final Curtain Call Looming for the Great Movie Ride?

Rumours have begun to swirl among Disney's Hollywood Studios Cast that the Great Movie Ride will permanently close when the current 3 year Turner Classic Movie sponsorship expires circa Late Spring 2018.

The rumour is that the sponsorship was restricted to this period due to plans for an eventual replacement.

Although details of the replacement vary, the general rumour is that the Chinese Theater facade would stay with a new Local Positioning System (trackless) E-Ticket ride replacing the interior of the building.

I would be sorry to see this ride go away. Although it no longer holds any surprises, I still enjoy it.

I'm a fan of the GMR, but there is a fair bit of space in there, and they could do something pretty neat.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this rumor.

Another huge fan. The GMR has a very special place in my heart. I definitely won't be happy if it goes away.

I'm hoping that this is just another of those annoying rumors that keep surfacing.

It is a fun ride, but certainly dated and with no real connection to Disney or what they're trying to accomplish in DHS it makes sense. Keeping the theater facade is an interesting thought assuming the location might be tied to Toy Story or Star Wars. Perhaps it would be an updated "movie experience" type ride but tied to Disney titles?

DH and I like GMR, but honestly, it's getting tired. I think something new will be refreshing.

Is "LucasLand" and "Toy Story/Pixar Land" going to be complete and open by this time? If not, they really need to rethink the timing.

There are complaints that visitor levels are down this year...Could it be due to too much being under closure/rehab/reimaginearing all at once? Get these two "lands" AND "Pandora" in Animal Kingdom to a "Phase 1" opening status -- a few attractions/rides/shows/shops open (70 - 80% complete) -- before closing anything else down.

I love the Great Movie Ride and will get a tad misty to see it go but it may be time to let the space be reused. The Great Movie Ride is a tad stale. Keeping the Chinese Theater facade will go a long way to placating me and with the dopey hat gone the view down Hollywood Blvd. is restored to largely the look and feel of the MGM of old.

Frankly, I enjoy the opening reel sequence in the queue line more than I do the ride itself. I enjoy old movies, so I don't mind TGMR, but without any updates, no surprises, it just well past its prime.

I agree it needs updating, but this ride is special to me because it was the first ride I rode on my first trip to Disney World. I will be very sad to see it go.

Well, with so many good movies to choose from.. I'm sure it'll have Frozen, and maybe Frozen 2, and maybe star wars 12 or something in it..

I agree. I could watch the opening reel sequence over and over again but, although I do like the ride itself, it's not on our must-do list these days. I guess the novelty has worn off and we usually skip it unless we're with someone who wants to ride. I think I'll welcome something new in its place.
    Nice work, pal.

I have been reading rumours that it will become "The Great Mickey Ride". To which I say "It's about time!" When I was 10, I told my Mom I was going to work for Disney some day so I could add a Mickey attraction..

There are also rumours that it will be added to Disneyland Resort as well.
I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

So if they're going to gut the place, I call dibs on the hieroglyphics panel in the Indiana Jones scene that contains R2D2.

A disney ride featuring Mickey? Has that happened before? That would be awesome.

Now there is an idea.. How about Jungle Book, Maelifiscent, Herbie, Fantasia, Zorro, Pete's Dragon, Nutty Professor, Mary Poppins, etc. Incorporate some respect to the old and new live action Disney films.
