    Default Replacement for Disney Dollars

A friend is going with us on our family reunion trip. He has a daughter who will be turning 5 and a son who will be 3 months shy of being 7. They wouldn't be able to afford a trip on their own, and I want to be sure they have some spending money for souvenirs. I vaguely remember something about Disney Dollars going away which is unfortunate, because they would have been great for birthday presents, etc. Is there anything like that now or any other ideas you guys have used in the past?

The replacement is a Disney Gift Card... I don't like it, but that's what they have. Haven't used Disney Dollars in a long time, I would guess that there's a lot more unspent money floating around with those than gift cards, but what do I know..

A gift card will be harder for them to understand how much money they have to spend, but I guess it is less likely to get lost than a bunch of disney dollars.

Yes, Disney Gift Cards are the replacement.

If you purchase through the Official Disney Gift Card site there are different designs you can choose from:

Might be a nice personal touch if they have any favorite Disney Characters or Movies.

It looks like they come with a card carrier. Not as convenient as individual denominations, but I typically keep the last receipt in the carrier with the card to remember the current balance.

Thank you for that tidbit. Different designs would help them know whose is whose.

Yeah, they have a wide variety of Disney gift cards. You can even get them at a regular grocery store, but I imagine the Disney Parks or the Disney Store have more variety.

When you use the gift card, the receipt has the remaining balance printed on it.

Honestly, Gift Cards are a better way to teach kids about spending than paper money. Who still uses paper money nowadays? They might as well get used to swiping a card...

My kids have been using gift cards since they were about 5....they totally understand how it works. Don't worry about it.
