Default Pacing requirements for the Dopey Challenge

I saw where there is a 16 minute per mile pace for the 10K, Half, and Full marathon races at WDW this January. I am a race walker and I'm looking at some hip surgery after the Dopey Challenge. I plan on being at a 15 min/mile pace but I want to have that cushion to slow down if I need it.

My question is how strict are the race officials on the pacing? I looked at the Dopey Challenge results from this past January and there were a LOT of people over the allotted times. Over 1,100 marathoners were slower than the 7:00 deadline. Do you not get medals but are allowed to finish? The 10K and Half races were the same in terms of numbers being over the deadline.

Just curious how they worked this. Thanks in advance.

Disney is generous, and starts the pacing when the last runners cross the start line. So, if you're not the last one to start, you have an extra cushion on the time!

But, yes, if you're over that final 16 minute pace you may be swept. They do a good job of letting you know you're in "danger", and will encourage you to keep going, if you can.

I think everyone gets the race medal, but I only do the shorter races, so I'm not 100% what happens at the marathon level. I'm pretty sure you have to complete it within the requirements for the Dopey Challenge medal.

If you are on target for a 15/mile pace you will do fine. Like the other poster said, the balloon ladies don't start until the last person of the last corral crosses the starting line, so depending on your corral it is very possible for you to have inflated finish times without being swept and even like you say finish the race with a pace greater than 16 min/mile.

I never stopped for pics unless the line was really short, and I wouldn't advise stopping in a long line if you are worried about pace. In fact, I would choose pace over characters any day.

I am so excited for you!
