.......you're likely spot on with the "captive audience" theory which will somewhat limit accessibility to other area venues

.....I thought about this too, and have somewhat followed (meaning I paid attention here and there as time allowed) the "Mini-Vans" initiation at the parks / resorts. As I recall, the Mini-Vans were rolled out with a certain fee attached ....and then shortly thereafter ...the fee was increased a substantial amount.

.....now ...I'm sure there will be those that cry out "Conspiracy Theory" at me ....but ....had they NOT upped the fee a while back ...and had done so now, or shortly after the parking fee was announced .....you can only imagine the outcry from the Disney faithful. It would make this debacle's affiliated outrage seem like a garden party.....

You all realize that Universal has been charging for overnight parking at their hotels for years, right? And yes, the fees at their premier hotels are higher than at their budget hotels. It's not like this is a WDW invention.

What is this "Universal" that you speak of? :P

I don't think that's the point, people were accepting of the higher rates Disney charges because of the on-site perks which are rapidly diminishing. Universal also doesn't provide DME and charges for Express Pass unless you're staying Deluxe, so following your line of thinking we should also pay for those? Disney used to set the bar, not lower it.

We also have to look at the demographics and world population. The population keeps growing but the world doesn't. And people will travel across the world without thinking much of it. I leave for Japan on Wednesday on a trip. Why? Because I want to and like to visit new places. The cost was a minor factor but I live well within my means and always have money in my travel fund for trips every year, which includes Disney. We live in Nebraska and have annual passes-- not every year but every 2 or 3 years we buy them and work in 2-3 trips during that 12 month time frame. I think I saw Disney saw a 6% increase in park attendance last quarter. There are more people. There are more people going to Disney. Unless the economy crashes that isn't going to change.

I think many would agree. Its just the nickel and dime feeling for reoccurring visitors. They can still keep rates at one thing, then charge on the back end, that some people will not notice or factor into their thinking.

Hi - in my opinion Disney keeps raising the rates and charges more and more because we continue to pay the increases and additional fees. I was just there this month and do not plan to return for several years or until the bring the prices down. Very disappointed with Disney.

Yeah, and you'd die at 30k ft if they didn't, or freeze.

Yes, universal does charge parking. I don't mind paying Universal's parking because I feel like I am getting my $$ worth when staying in their resorts. I have not found the cost of our universal accommodations to be much inflated, if at all, so I don't mind paying the extras. We have stayed in the family suites at Cabana Bay, 4th of July week, with a party of 6 for just under $150 per night! Cabana Bay is their "value" type resort. I can assure you its as good as, or better, than Disney's moderate resorts for half the cost. You can't stay in Disneys value family suites for anywhere near $150, especially during a holiday. The pool areas at this "value" resort are as good as, and in most cases better, than most Disney deluxe resorts. They have a very nice gym on site, bowling ally, plus many other amenities that you will not find in a Disney value (or even moderate) resort. We could walk to the new water park, and never waited more than 5 minutes for any bus to the parks. So when I am paying as little as $150 a night I can certainly understand things like parking aren't included.

Disney prices, for me, are just far too inflated for them to be charging more money to park at my resort than to park in the parks!!!! Not saying we won't go back to Disney because of this, but we took a nice break from Disney a few years ago for similar feelings, and after our upcoming May trip I think we will explore some of the other places on our list of vacations destinations. We could use another break for a few years.

**Update** I had contacted Disney to voice my concern and received the "canned" response to the tune of, "It may interest you to know that nearly 80% of full-service hotels in the Central Florida area already charge an overnight parking fee". True, that made sense to me, yet we were used to no parking fees as a perk, an advertised perk, in fact. Then they said, "Be assured that we are committed to providing unique experiences and quality entertainment ...". So, how are they being unique when they "want" to fall within the norm of those other "nearly 80%"? Oh well, we all know it's a money grab, nothing more nothing less. I'm glad my reservations are already made for this year .... still tho, it's irritating in how they want us to think how amazingly wonderful we have it by staying onsite ... thing is, those days are not so glamorous as before.....

Exactly. What makes you different from those 80? Why shouldn't I go stay there? Plus have a better breakfast at 80% of other hotels.

My response was basically, how can you now hold yourself above the rest, superior, different, the leader when you now align with the rest .... I did indicate that although I get that they are a for profit business, why not simply increase the resort fees, at some point, again, and simply earmark that increase to cover the parking fees .... why say "we are now making you pay to park" ..... I'll not get a response but I did say my peace ....

I feel like perhaps a more "user friendly" solution would be to offer on site guests EITHER use of magical express OR free parking. As previous posters have noted, they always drive and indirectly contribute to ME but don't use it. If someone does use ME and then also chooses to rent, charge a nominal fee to those guests. To me though, with the different fee according to level of resort, it's just a resort fee in disguise. Guests staying deluxe already pay 2-3x more for their room, they shouldn't have to also pay more for the spot their car occupies.
