Exclamation Magic Kingdom Updates Tron Coaster Progress & Announces 2 Related Ride Closures

The Magic Kingdom has announced an update for the apparently yet-to-be-named 'Tron coaster-style attraction':

First, the Walt Disney World Railroad will temporarily take up residence at the Main Street Station starting in December 2018, pausing its grand-circle tours of Magic Kingdom Park. During this time, guests will be able to get an up-close look at the railroad and take advantage of one-of-a-kind photo opportunities.

The Tomorrowland Speedway will close for a portion of 2019, as the attraction’s track is adjusted. It will reopen as the same attraction our guests know and love in the summer of 2019.

Magic Kingdom’s Tron attraction, which is set to debut in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021, is based on TRON Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disneyland. This coaster-style attraction allows riders to board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for a thrilling race through the digital frontier. TRON Lightcycle Power Run debuted on Shanghai Disneyland’s opening day and quickly became the highest-rated attraction at the park.

This makes me sad. I know many will miss the railroad, and I wish they would update the speedway, since it will be down anyways.

Original plans had the Speedway getting a Tron makeover...

BRODIE: Hey, now, be fair. EVERYONE wants Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

I liked Tron as a kid, I remember the game was pretty fun, but is there something I'm missing ..... is there a new movie I missed ??? hahaha .... I am not kidding ..... I missed it didn't I ??? I like the art and the idea of a coaster type Tron ride thing ..... hopefully it's as good or better than Slinky Dog .... also, I agree the Speedway needs a face lift !!!

I got the impression they thought North America did not like the movie. Enough that they pulled the plug on a sequel. Yet, years later they build an attraction? This is an admission that (1) they probably misjudged the appeal of the franchise and (2) building copies of attractions is really cheaper (and less risky) than inventing something new.

Any word on the likely time frame of the Railroad closure? Would think it's unlikely to affect us as at the earliest our next visit is Fall 2019... but still curious!
    Disney World Visits:
    1. May-June 1998 (3 weeks)
    2. May-June 2001 (3 weeks)
    3. October-November 2004 (2 weeks)
    4. August-September 2010 (2 weeks)
    5. August-September 2017 (2 weeks)

Well, when did Avatar come out? But unlike Avatar, Tron is timeless.

Just a note for the smokers out there:
(Yes, I know we are all BAD people!!)

The smoking area on the path between Space Mountain and FantasyLand will be closed and moved to an earlier location they used - between Space Mountain and the bathrooms behind the TomorrowLand Stage.

Tron Legacy made $44M it's opening weekend and went on to gross $172M so maybe it was out five or six weeks before it disappeared into oblivion. For reference, this year's The Meg opened with $45M and only raked in $132M to date. If we still had DVDs or VHS tapes then both would likely be in the bargain bin. I never really "got" Tron either, but the attraction got rave reviews in China...right? If it's more fun than Stitch's Great Escape then I'm in!
