It is rough at first, but after a while, you'll enjoy being able to do what you want, when you want to. Do you have any hobbies you like? Maybe find a group that shares those interests, take a class at the local community college, hit the gym, get a massage, redecorate your house, go sight seeing. Whatever it is you like to do for yourself or thought about trying, go do it.
I don't live alone but I did adopt two dogs to deal with empty nest syndrome when my youngest was heading off to college. I agree with Cinderelly, you should look into local groups to see what's available. I know here in MA a lot of towns have Recreation brochures that offer sports, yoga classes, art, etc. Find something you love and go try it. Good luck figuring it out, just make sure you stay active and busy.
There are always tons of organizations that need volunteers or groups tailored to different interests you can get involved with. What things were you interested in before you had kids? I'm sure you had interests back then that time-constraints may have forced you to set on the back-burner and now you can rediscover. Be a foster mom for dogs or cats?
