Ride Success and Not So Much
I was at DisneyLand this week and went to the new Stars Wars land -- and rode the Millennium Falcon Ride. Some observations... somewhere I read the Walt's ideas for rides (particularly Haunted Mansion and Pirates -- and others) was to immerse the rider in a "movie" -- thus these rides take you on a journey through multiple scenes, creating a story. This new ride (and this isn't the only one) is basically just one experience/scene -- yes it takes you on a video journey, but this is not as satisfying as flying over London in Peter Pan or the battle scene in Pirates or Madame Leota. Every time my family goes to DL or WDW, we ride Mansion, Pirates, Peter Pan and others SEVERAL times. Frankly, the Millennium Falcon Ride felt like a one and done ride -- no interest in doing it again. I don't know if the immersive story rides are just to expensive nowadays or what makes them hard to do --- imagine a flying ride that takes your spacecraft into the Star Wars universe (not in a video) with the Millennium Falcon flying by, Star War cities below, flying through a battle, through an Ewok forest, seeing the Hologram Obi Wan Ken-obi scene "You're our only hope," etc -- where you physically see and experience these scenes -- it would be so much more satisfying than a video game... Just my opinion.

Which position did you have on the ride? I have heard that the enjoyment of the ride is dependent on your job in the ride.
And I am like you, I enjoy the old rides. I'll ride them over and over again.
I'll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.

Not enough flashy screens. What they feel newer folks want.
Of course, I still miss Mr. Toad and that was one of the redeeming qualities of DL. Though I do love the Cars racers. Great story, feel like you are in the movie.
From my understanding of Falcon, its a ride through something not really familiar.

I think part of the problem with creating a ride around an existing movie is that you no longer need to create a "movie" during the ride. How many people will actually ride this and have no concept for the basis of it? Yes, there will be people that ride Millennium Falcon that haven't seen the movie, but few will be completely ignorant of its origins.

Out of curiosity, how much of Flight of Passage is taken out of the movie?

Who cares, its Avatar. Certainly not a historic franchise like Star Wars

It does have its following. I have never seen it and enjoy the ride. I was wondering how much magicofdisney's comment really affects the rides.

Directly? Not much. BUT, the basis for the FoP ride is Jake's first introduction to the Ikrans and his first flight. It has been 'plussed' in having the 'big bad' chasing you through the center scene of the ride, but the idea of the ride is that you are having your first flight and seeing the world of Pandora through your 'link'
Honestly, I think Cameron might have had a flight like this in the movie if the time and expense weren't too great at the time. Jake's first flight in the movie was good, but this would have been exceptional.

I'm certainly a bigger fan of Star Wars than Avatar, but, if I ever go back to WDW, I will be more interested in checking out the Pandora area than Galaxy's Edge.

Watching videos of Smuggler's Run... I fell asleep... I can only imagine how they ruined what should be an iconic ride by making it interactive where the only ones who matter are the two pilots, and if they stink up the joint, the gunners can't shoot right... And the engineers are basically useless...

TRICIA JONES: I heard that you were going to propose to Brandi Svenning at some theme park. When are men going to learn that women want ROMANCE, not Mr. Toad's Wild Ride...
BRODIE: Hey, now, be fair. EVERYONE wants Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.
