Country Bear Playhouse to Give Farewell Performances at Disneyland Park Through September 9

The "Country Bear Playhouse" attraction in DISNEYLAND® park that features more than 20 "Audio-Animatronics®" bears wielding banjos and fiddles and singing fractured tunes about their "beary" amusing adventures, will lower the curtain on its 29-year run on Sunday, September 9, 2001. The longtime attraction will be making way for an undisclosed future attraction that is still in development.

The classic attraction has had a varied history during its three-decade engagement at the park. "Country Bear Playhouse" premiered in 1972 as the "Country Bear Jamboree" in what was then known as Bear Country, and was the first attraction to be re-created from a similar show at Walt Disney World in Florida, which had opened the previous year. For the 1984 holiday season, "Country Bear Jamboree" made a festive transition into the "Country Bear Christmas Show" and marked another first: the "Country Bear Christmas Show" became the first existing "Audio-Animatronics" attraction at DISNEYLAND to be re-programmed into a whole new show. This holiday version of the attraction has been a special presentation during many of the past 17 Yuletide seasons.

It was in 1989 that the Bear Country land was re-themed to Critter Country to reflect the addition of the fun-filled "Splash Mountain" flume-ride attraction. In 1986, a new daily version of the show starring the Country Bears made its debut in the form of the current "Country Bear Vacation Hoedown," and it is this edition that will continue until its finale on September 9.

"We are constantly in the process of refreshing and updating our parks with new shows and attractions," said Cynthia Harriss, president of the DISNEYLAND Resort. "The Country Bears have been a part of DISNEYLAND for nearly 30 years, and we feel it is time give our cast of bears a well-deserved rest and create a brand new attraction for our guests to enjoy."

Personally I think they should have waited till the movie comes out. I bet attendance would have gone through the roof...

    Thumbs down

I have to say ... This seems like a strange choice with the movie coming out. Usually Disney never misses a chance to cross-promote!

I wonder what they'll replace it with ?

I think there is more going on at WDI than meets the eye, it just does not add up to remove a attraction that they have decided to turn into a movie, think of the merchandising possiblites for the gift shop at the end of the attraction.

I think there are either one of two senerios that will unfold.

    1) CB will be replaced with a Pooh attraction and a new CB more realted to the movie and proably with newer AA will popo-up somewhere else in the near future.

2)CB is just being changed to be related with the movies and gift shop to boot. Poh will be built else where probably Fantasyland. It just does not make sense for Pooh to be in Critter Country, Pooh is not a Country Critter.

well pooh would somewhat fit since his meet and greet area is right next store. I also do think this might be a gimmick for the movie. In the movie they are fitting for there theater so Disneyland might try the same then it will probley be upgrade or moved. then we will see pooh somewhere else MAYBE. Or just say bye bye to the bears cause her comes pooh and his friends.

From what I understand it will be replaced with a cheaper and shorter version of the Pooh attraction from WDW. WDW's version is of course a cheaper version of the one in Tokyo.

    sigh...

Ah, the dreaded "undisclosed future attraction"... kinda like the timekeeper, skyway, 20,000 leages and for the longest time, horizons. At least they finally did something with horizons.

I'll never understand closing an attraction if you don't have a plan in place to replace it or remove visual cues that it was there.

That's exactly what I was going to say. Why are they closing it if the attraction they are making is still on the drawing board?!?! To be honest I don't really care that it's closing at Disneyland, especially since it's still at WDW, but to close it without having it's replacement ready is cheating the public out of their money. Then again, I guess that's never stopped them before.
