When we first went to Disney World, there were swimming areas with lifeguards on Bay Lake's beaches. I remember swimming in the lake at Disney's Fort Wilderness campground. Also, at that time, anyone staying on site at any place in Disney World could swim in any pool on property. While staying at the campground, we would often head over to the pool at the Contemporary or the one at the Polynesian.

Totally!
We swam in bay lake many times and never thought about alligators or brain eating bacteria. They used to have a safe area roped off to swim in.
Remember well seeing Goofy water skiing as well. And dreamed of when I’d be able to take a water sprite out on my own instead of riding with my parents.
Also remember doing pirates excursions as a kid while your parents enjoyed dinner and searching for buried treasure with a bunch of other kids.
Good times. And let’s not forget about the wave machine and Discovery Island.

I remember this being a thing. I never swam in the lake, but I remember seeing people on the Poly beach.
You're dead if you aim only for kids. Adults are only kids grown up, anyway.
