I was a little worried about this. However, although Im still not sold on Hanks as Walt, it does look good...
Movies thread????? :)
This movie cannot do as bad as Lone Ranger or John Carter or Mars Needs Moms, can it?
Now that trailer makes me kind of want to see it... Looks like it could be an entertaining film...
I...can't...wait.
Wow ... I'm irrationally excited to see this film. And I agree Tom Hanks doesn't sound like Walt, but I think that's fine. I'm glad he didn't try and impersonate him. Walt is Walt and Tom is Tom. Tom is portraying Walt, not impersonating him.
This movie looks like a true gem. Can't wait to see it!
Can not wait for this movie!
I am hyperventilating at this! It's my greatest loves in one film!!! Woohoo!!!
I think it looks very good. Ian, I think you made a good point. I have to admit, at first I was a little disappointed with the voice in the trailer. Then I went and looked up some more casual interviews Walt did (what was life like before YouTube, again? ;) )and realized Hanks pretty much nailed Walt's more casual speaking pattern. It's a bit different than his formalized pattern that we so often here in the more famous soundbites. Can't wait. :mickey:
I think it would be nearly impossible to imitate Walt's voice without it being a distraction. Not only did he have a strong Midwestern accent with a bit of twang, he also had a lisp and, in the years when this film was set, a little smoker's gravel. I always think of his voice as the quintessential grandfather's.
It looks like a beautiful movie. Can't wait either!
So Walt is Woody? :D
Honestly, when I saw the trailer yesterday, I was actually disappointed that the voice wasn't a little more Walt, but I'll get over it.
I'm exited for this film. The Disneyland scenes look great! And I have to say, the guys playing the Sherman brothers look spot on.
I am very very excited for this film. I think To Hanks looks great as Walt. I think he is one of the few actors that has very much respect for Walt. Can't wait.
To all of you who are concerned about the voice, sure, he doesn't have the deep gravelly qualities in his voice... but he has applied a sort of mid-western accent to his speaking. But anyway! Just study Hanks' eyes and the expressions on his face. That's classic Walt. He's excitable and always just a big kid. He captures the spirit and enthusiasm of Mr. Disney entirely. Besides, how many actual "movie-movies" have been shot inside Disneyland? I'd wager close to none. And with as Hanks' put it, "Walt Disney himself"? Certainly none. This film looks amazing! No question.
We all just have to understand that this is NOT a movie about Walt Disney, but actually about P L Travers and what it took to bring "Mary Poppins" to the big screen.
Some of the articles I have been reading on this are very interesting in how Mrs. Travers insisted that all their dealings were taped in case of problems arising after any agreements had been made. This allowed the writers/filmmakers a wealth of actual information, rather than hearsay, on what occurred.
I, too, am really excited to see this film!
I am so excited about this film. Before I saw the trailer, I had the premise all wrong. I thought it was supposed to be about Walt. Even better that it is about all the hoops they had to jump through to get Mary Poppins. I remember reading a while back that she (Mrs. Travers) was very difficult to work with.
Love that Emma Thompson is playing Travers. I loved her in the Harry Potter films.
What a treat in December! :D
