I like to book the Universal portion of the trip on the weekend - or whenever WDW is craziest...that way, I miss WDW crowds and I can manage Universal's with my room key fast pass!
Don't faint, but I visit Orlando at times without stepping on Disney property! I find I get more bang for the buck at Universal, Sea World, and busch Gardens. My Universal Preferred AP renewal is $99 + tax a year and, unlike the ticket prices for the Orlando attractions, the renewal rate hasn't risen for years. I pay around $14 a month for my 2 year pass at Busch Gardens and Sea World. WDW is nice, but it ain't cheap! I would shell out for an AP, but it's pricey to do so. I usually buy the Florida resident seasonal pass every 2 years or so.
Besides, Universal, Sea World, and Busch Gardens have roller coasters that kick butt!
