Don't let MIL ruin your Magic! My DH and I went with friends in 1997 and had a similar experience. We ended up not going back for 9 years! What a waste! We have now been 4 times in 2 1/2 years and have 2 more trips planned this year!

Go back just the family. You won't believe what a great time you will have.

Some people are happiest complaining. Unfortunatly my mother tends to be the "perfecting complainer". If things are PERFECT...it could be perfecter if they'd only improve this ONE thing. SIGHHHHH. The older you get the better you'll get at learning to tune it out. You can suggest..."If you like you can go ahead and try something you like and will catch up with you a little later..." But then...you'll be met with the tears..."you don't want me..."

Ahhh phooey...go back and have fun.

I'm sorry your trip turned out as it did, but realize now that we're not the only ones. We took extended family one year and thought we had laid the groundwork for being somewhat independent from each other for part of the trip. They wanted to stick together the entire week and definitely didn't share our appreciation for WDW. On top of it, our kids were really stoked about the rides and they wanted to shop constantly. It put such a damper on our trip.
We decided the only answer was to erase that memory with new ones. In less than a month, we went back and had the best trip ever. Drastic times call for drastic measures and its the only time we've done back-to-back trips, but it was so great to enjoy Disney World on our terms. We realized that WDW is our 'happy place' and we're not interested in having to share it with people that don't feel similarly, even if they are family.

Hmmm, been there, done that, can't say that I ever want to do it again! I don't like my FIL's wife so much that I refuse to call her my MIL - she's not DH's mother anyway and they've only been married for 8 years. My real MIL was great for the most part - I miss her.

You need to go back ASAP, yes you say the magic is slowly coming back, but you need a complete emersion into the magic more of a complete transfusion of the mouse. There are always those that can find bad in anything, I just don't know why Anyway, here's some pixie dust for you to tide you over till you can walk through the tunnel at the MK.

Wow - I didn't think I'd get so much support or hear from so many others that have relatives/friends that don't appreciate Disney. I can't imagine why some people just don't get Disney or why they don't 'feel' the magic.

This was actually the in-laws first time to WDW, they are in their 70's and had never gone. They prefer more 'sophisticated' vacations (like the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and Italy). Yes, those places are certainly beautiful in their own way, but you can't feel like a kid anywhere else but WDW. Guess they just got too old to just enjoy some childhood innocence and fun. It's a shame for them.,


My parents took me almost every year from the time I was 4 until 24. My mom and dad always loved going and loved taking us. In fact, they want to go with us and the kids this year. I think I am going to go ahead and start planning. Now, if I can just convince hubby that it's in our budget....

I am so sorry you had a bad experience with your MIL!

8 years ago my DH ad i took my MIL &FIL with us to WDW to enjoy the magic with us and our two DDs (then 10 & 6). My FIL complained the whole time! He wanted to go back and sit in the rooma nd watch football most of the trip. We had to escort him to the room because my DH was afraid he would get lost...give me a break! My FIL also kept telling us that he missed his grandsons. He was saying this in front of our DDs. My oldest picked up on what he was saying and asked me later why grandpa loves her cousins more than her and her sister. Talk about pulling on my heart strings. Needless to say, we have not taken them back and never will, at least not my FIL. I would take my MIL though.

Again, I am very sorry your vacation was not magical!!!

Actually, she did pay for everything. And my husband is intimidated by her - so much for him stepping up.

In that case, there is little you can do. Next time, make sure she does not know about it. I would not count this experience as the norm.

I don't think that I can add anything that hasn't already been said.
My two main points are to make new memories and that some people just complain so much that it is a way of life.
