Today in Disney History 9/11
Sept. 11, 1995 – Disney’s syndicated TV series “Danny,” starring Danny Bonaduce, began airing. (Ended Feb. 2, 1996)
Sept. 11, 1998 – The 16th Annual “Night of Joy” (2-day event) began in the Magic Kingdom at WDW.
Sept. 11, 1998 – The Disney/Hollywood Picture film “Simon Birch” was released.
Sept. 11, 2000 – Disney’s syndicated half-hour series “House Calls” aired for the first time.
Sept. 11, 2001 – Following the morning terrorist attacks on The Pentagon, and New York City’s World Trade Center, The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and The Disneyland Resort in California closed without incident. All the resort hotels remained opened and provided accommodations to guests who were unable to leave. Phone charges were suspended so that guests could reach family. (The closure marked only the 2nd time Disneyland has locked its gates in its 56-year history due to a national tragedy. The first time followed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.)
Sept. 11, 2001 – At Disneyland Resort, food and beverage stations remained open at no charge to guests who were at the Park. AMC Theaters at Downtown Disney showed free Disney films for stranded Resort guests.
Sept. 11, 2001 – The Disney Stores closed as well as Disney’s Broadway shows in New York and on the road.
Sept. 11, 2001 – Michael Eisner released a statement to Cast Members explaining the Disney closings. He ended his note with these words: “Finally let me say our company around the world will continue to operate in this sometimes violent world in which we live, offering products that reach to the higher and more positive side of the human equation.”
Sept. 11, 2001 - Walt Disney World evacuated the parks and closed due to the terror attack on the U.S.A.
Sept. 11, 2002 – Disney’s three Broadway musicals cancelled this day’s performances, as N.Y.C. and the rest of the country honored those lost in the terrorist attacks of 9-11.
Sept. 11, 2007 – A special flag retreat ceremony took place in the Magic Kingdom to commemorate Patriot Day.
