In general they'll gate check your ECV and wheelchair you down and back out. They can at least get you to the airplane door. Sometimes they'll just check your ECV at the door.

Back in 2007, we flew Jet Blue with DWs scooter. She drove it straight up to the gate, then they loaded it on the plane. It was waiting for her at the gate when we landed.
We used Jet Blue because it was the only airline that gave us straight answers on the phone.

I have traveled with my scooter several times and each time I rode the scooter to the door of the plane and they took it from there.
I also got a gate check tag for it as soon as I get to the gate.
When we get to our destination, I am one of the last ones off the plane due to waiting for the scooter to come up from the hold.
It is really pretty easy to travel with. I also take pictures of the scooter while waiting of the gate with a date and time on it, in case of any damage. I also check it over before I leave the jetway for any damage when I get it back. Have never had any damage, but better safe than sorry.
FYI if there is any damage to your scooter, you need to report it immediately. The airline is responsible to pay for any damage and any repairs that might be needed. If it can't be repaired, the airline has to pay for rentals and equivalent replacement.
