Default A little humor in a sad situation

The sad: My 95 year old granny is literally on her deathbed. After falling and breaking her leg right below where pins were set 4 years ago, she took a turn for the worse before surgery. Her heart is failing bad.

The humor: The doctor came in to explain the situation and introduced himself, "Hi. I'm Dr. Pepper." My wife, my sister and I were trying to hold back the laughter so bad, we never heard what he said after introducing himself. Luckily, it went right over my dad's head and he explained to us after Dr. Pepper left.

I hope I didnt sound too callous.

First and foremost....I am so sorry to hear about the health status of your loved one.

Second, ...don't feel bad about finding 'light' in a 'dark' situation.

    It's called being human......

Oh my goodness, Dr. Pepper? That's too much. Of course it's okay to laugh. The good doctor has probably gotten quite a few reactions to his name.

My own grandparents are so dear to me and getting on in years as well. Best wishes to your granny, and to you and your family as well.

Having spent many, many days in the hospital with my son, I do know that you have to find some lightness and humor somewhere. That is really funny!!

Sorry about your granny I hope she is not suffering.

I am very sorry to hear about Granny's health. I understand completely where you are coming from. Laughter is the best medicine. You are being far from callous.
When my brother died unexpectedly in April, I was driving back home from the hospital listening to the radio. All of the sudden a song came on called "Bad day" (or something along those lines). DH went to turn the radio off and I wouldn't let him. I needed to laugh and the timing was priceless.

First off, I just want to say how sorry I am to hear about your grandmother. I lost my 97 year old great-grandfather on May 30 and understand how difficult what you are going through can be. We spent a few days in the hospital with him at the end (luckily it wasn't drawn out and he could talk up until the last 17 hours) and we tried to find humor where we could. Even Grandad was trying to make us laugh. Its a tough situation and laughter helps us get through these times, so find it where you can. I bet your grandmother would want the same thing for you.

My mom is dying of kidney disease, and has some rather distressing problems in the bathroom. One day, she just opened the door a crack and yelled, "code brown".

One other time, she thought she was somewhere else for a moment, talking to her sister, (who's been gone for 25 years). She realized after awhile, when I said 'huh"?, and said, Helen says "hi".

It's hard to watch her going down this road, but her sense of humor makes it less bumpy.

I'm sorry to hear about your Granny. There is nothing wrong with finding humor where you can. I'm sure even Granny would have laughed if she heard it! Thinking of you during this difficult time.

I'm so sorry about your granny. DH and I have lost all of our grandparents and we miss them terribly. I'm glad you were able to still find a little humor - it's good for you and not callous at all. It's not like you were poking fun at the situation and that is a pretty funny name.

Marilyn, reading about your mom made me smile - "Code Brown" is our code at work for similar extra-messy situations. I'm glad to hear that she still has her sense of humor - it will make all those really hard days just a little easier.

I'm sorry to hear about your granny's health but I'm glad that she has lived such a long life and has been with you for so long.
As for laughing, I would have pee'd my pants!
It's called "gallows humor" and I think it is God's way of letting you know that He is there with you and it's okay.

On a different note I had a detective come into my job looking for my boss, the detective's name was "looney"
THis just cracked me up. Can you imagine getting arrested and having to call home and say "I've been busted by officer looney"

Sorry to hear about your grandmother. Don't worry about laughing during such a distressing time. I see families go through it all the time in the ER. Crying and then laughing and then crying and laughing again. It's just how humans deal with things.

Now, I do wonder why some of these people don't change their names.
I'll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.
