Retro Kits in NFL?

Hi All.

I'm here in the UK watching the Jets/Titans game and the Titans have their old logo on their helmets and their coaching staff are wearing Houston Oilers jerseys. I know the franchise moved from Houston to Tenessee.
The Jets also seem to be wearing a retro kit and I noticed in week one that the Patriots had their old logo on their helmets.

Is their something going on or is this all a blatant piece of marketing?

Officially, I have no idea. I think it's just something they like to do now and then for the fans, to reminisce about the team's history and please the fans who have been with their team for so long that they remember and miss the way it used to be. I think it's really just a nostalgia thing/tribute, for the most part. I could be way off, that's just the way I feel about it. From a marketing standpoint, I'm sure it doesn't hurt.

Well, it all depends. I know for years in both MLB and NFL there were "Retro" games where the teams wore old uniforms and then they were usually auctioned off. But, nowadays, it's often used to push merchandise. For example a few years ago the Eagles played a game in these horrid looking light blue and yellow uniforms which were supposed to reminiscent of the old Frankford Yellow Jackets team. They wore them for one game, but sold the Jerseys. You'd be surprised at how many people actually bought these things, just because. I really miss the old Eagles unis with the Kelly Green and the wings on the helmet.

This was in our local paper:

"In a season commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the American Football League, the eight original AFL franchises will wear their 1960 jerseys."

It appears when the eight originals play against one another they will be wearing the legacy uniforms.

Many of the throwback AFL jerseys are better than the modern ones.
Still can't figure out the ugly Seahawks uniforms worn today.

I am so sick of these retro uniforms.
for the past - what 3 years now- they have been putting these out there...year 1- novelty, its cool. Year 2, bored now-been there done that, year 3 (now) please make them stop.
To me its about marketing- how many retro jerseys sell. rant over

although it would have been neat to see the NY Titans (NY Jets) play the Tennesse Titans (themselves)...

I heard on one of the post-game shows that the Seahawks were wearing throwback jerseys for a World Football League team. I think it was one from Orlando, but I couldn't confirm this using Google.

As for the orange ref uniforms, someone on ESPN said the next day that they were only 3 pieces of "flair" shy of a cluck bucket!
