    Default Bye Bye Power Rangers!

Not sure how this slipped by:

    From MSNBC.COM

Mogul buys back Power Rangers from Disney
New episodes planned for television, possible feature film in the works

LOS ANGELES - Media mogul Haim Saban is buying back the fist-pumping, multicolored superheroes known as the Power Rangers from the Walt Disney Co., hoping to launch the enduring franchise into a higher orbit.

The Egyptian-born billionaire made his fortune by licensing the Power Rangers from Japan back in the 1990s. He sold his half of the Fox Family Channel, which included the Power Rangers, to Disney in a deal worth $5.2 billion in 2001. His portion came to about $1.5 billion.

Now, he's taking the team of morphing teenagers back.

Can't say I'm upset, not sure what Disney was thinking buying them in the first place, except they were looking to cash in with young boys.

My DS was SO into the Rangers at the time Disney bought them - but the characters became weaker and weaker with each new series. From what I remember, everything after Dino Thunder was forgettable. But for that period of time when he was into 'em, yeah - Saban & Disney cashed in on us!

I'm not surprised Saban bought his baby back; after all, it doesn't seem like Disney's doing much with the property anyway. I'll be curious to know if/when Disney will announce the end of the Ranger Meet-and-Greet at DHS.

My favorites? Time Force & Dino Thunder.

My DS who is 8 is no longer interested in the PRs. He is more interested in Pixar characters and thrill rides, so I don't consider it a huge loss. I don't even know where to find the show on TV anymore?!?

I'm pretty sure this was Disney's plan from the get go. They didn't have anything that appealed to boys, girls had Princesses. They needed something that would pull in some money, so it made sense to buy a property like PR, milk it for all it was worth without spending any money for new development, etc, then drop it.

    Cool

Yeah this was one of those head-scratching moves that Disney made that made me go, "Huh???"

But I guess they took the money and ran for a few years. I wonder how much he paid to buy them back? It would be interesting to see how much money Disney lost on the deal.

Ds 6 loves the Power Rangers and we always had to do meet & greet. I even took one of his photos with the Blue ranger and had it made into a poster for his room. I thought it was good they had something for boys. Ds is very sad

I think the Power Rangers came as part of the Fox Family package when Disney bought the cable station and then turned it into ABC family station

Funny thing about this is that I had just said to DH the day before this was announced that I was thinking that eventually Disney would get rid of the Power Rangers - hopefully in favor of Marvel characters. Maybe this is just the first step in my plan coming to fruition...
