DW and I stayed at POR last time and we did not have a car. Busses were fine and bus stops were close to our room. However, you still have to wait for the bus. Disney does a great job with this (imagine how many folks they move around every single day), but you still have some wait time involved. And, you may still have several stops to make once you get back to the resort, depending on whether your bus goes to POR or POFQ first. This is a minor issue to me, but might be more important to others.

Given the option, I prefer having my own car. I've driven down to WDW before (and will be doing it again next month ), and I really like having the freedom to come and go as I want. Parking has never really been a problem for us, and you still have the option of using the busses if you want to (or if your crowd splits up).

But all this is theological hairsplitting. I think we can all agree that the most important thing is that you are THERE, regardless of how you get around.

As some have stated its a personal preference.
We like both: transportation and having a car. We like to stay at the parks and try to be the last ones out. We use the bus to get back to the room but by the time we get back to the room, we are hungry and the food courts/restaraunts are closed. We hop in the car and off to Crossroads we go. I also make time to meet up with friends that live in Florida and we meet up at IHOP. We also like to play minature golf and we drive over. I like to go shopping at the Trading Post in FW and we drive over there plus if you have dinner reservations at a Resort the time it takes to get from point A to B can be lengthy without a car.

I rent a car because I fly to Tampa (it's much quicker/easier and cheaper than Orlando). On the way up to WDW, I stop and grab a case of water, breakfast items and snacks. Saves $$$ in the parks.
