Best resort for dinner?
We may be having some friends join us for dinner one night before we go to Universal the next day. So wondered what resorts have the best restraunts to prevent them from having to purchase a park ticket just for the night.
Thanks in advance!

My favorite dining is at the resorts. So many excellent choices! Forgive me if you mean dining at Universal resorts, your post is a little unclear on that. At WDW--
At Grand Floridian: GF Cafe, Narcoossees, Citricos. Or character dining at 1900 Park Fare.
At the Polynesian: 'Ohana (festive and fun, fanily style) or Kona Cafe (quieter, casual meal).
At the Contemporary: California Grill (spectacular views, reopening soon) or the Wave.
At the Boardwalk: Kouzzina or Flying Fish (plus many more)
At Animal Kingdom Lodge: Sanaa, Jiko, or Boma.
These are just to name a few. There are also some good choices at the other deluxe resorts and moderates or DVC properties plus all of Downtown Disney (which doesn't require a separate admission fee).

My favorite resort restaurant is Ohanas at the polynesian. The Polynesian is also just really beautiful, and you can see Wishes from the resort. If you're lucky, and get seated by the window during wishes, you can watch while you eat.
First trip: 1999 AS Movies
Stayed since at: AS Music, AS Sports, Contemporary, Fort Wilderness, Wilderness Lodge, Port Orleans FQ
Next visit: October 15-22, 2016 [Port Orleans French Quarter]

If doing Ohana, and fireworks start at 8:00, whats the best time to make your reservation?

I would recommend the Turf Club at Saratoga Springs I enjoyed a delicious NY Strip Steak with Lobster Fondue there and it's only a boat ride away from DTD if you guys decide to go there after dinner. I would also recommend Kouzzina at the Boardwalk because once your meal is over there is plenty to do on the Boardwalk.

Another vote for Ohana. It's our favorite resort dining in Disney World and we have dinner here on every single trip.
Some other places we've really enjoyed in Disney are Grand Floridian Café at the Grand Floridian, and Captain's Grille at Yacht Club. All of these resorts, Poly, GF, YC, are great places not only for dinner, but for an after dinner stroll or monorail ride.
California Grill is another of our favorites, but not sure what the new menu will look like. If you time CG with Wishes you can go out on the observation deck to watch. It's a really neat place to see Wishes from. We always enjoy it.
If you have any interest in Universal, we had an excellent meal at The Kitchen at Hard Rock Hotel in Feb. We also really enjoy Bubba Gump Shrimp at Universal's City Walk. You don't need a ticket to get into City Walk, at least not that I am aware of. But you will have to pay for parking.

It's not an easy reservation to get, one of the most popular spots at WDW. Try for 6:45 or 7 pm. Sometimes there is a wait to be seated, so this could throw off fireworks plans. Also keep in mind that few tables at 'Ohana actually have a really good fireworks view. You might be better off eating early or later and planning to watch the fireworks from the Polynesian beach.

I also agree with Ohana!!
I also wouldn't try for the fireworks during the meal since there are so few tables. Eat dinner and then watch them on the beach!

I second viewing the fireworks from the beach at the Poly. That's what we did. Music is piped in. We also watched the electric boat parade from the beach.
Be sure to grab a drink and sit in a lounge chair.

We got a 7:50 ressie for Ohana. I thought about doing the 6:50 as well but since our friends are joining us from Tampa thought the extra hour might be good for them getting there. Then we can just order our drinks then watch the fireworks, then eat.

Sounds like an excellent evening. Just be prepared, there is a very good chance that your table at that time might not be by a window for fireworks viewing. It's not impossible, but most people with a good table for viewing fireworks are not likely to leave just before they happen at 8:00.
Also, plan to check in at 'OHana at least 15 minutes before your ADR. It will improve your chances of getting into the restaurant before the fireworks. 'OHana is known for getting behind on their seatings later in the evening. Enjoy your dinner - 'OHana is absolutely one of our favorites!
