Special Needs Child

Hey folks,

We have a 12 year old son who is ambulatory but because of lung problems will need a wheel chair for long distances. Lots of stairs would also be very tough on him.

Are there any suggestions on how to approach our trip to WDW? We are going to see 2 Braves Spring Training games, but have 3 days open to do other things.

Specifically, is the Animal Kingdom and Epcot fairly easy to "negotiate"?

WDW is VERY wheelchair friendly. I don't think you'll have much of a problem anywhere on the ground. Cast members will be there to help you when you need it.

You will have a wonderful time!!!!..

We've traveled with my MIL twice..She has sever pulmonary problems and is unable to walk...We had absolutely no obstacles to hinder our stay at WDW...The resorts, parks, transportation, & shops are all wheelchair assessable..It is a non-issue at Disney....

.....and like beth stated the staff is wonderful in assisting to any needs you might incur....

A couple of years ago my mom went with us at Christmas time and we used a wheel chair for her heart condition. Everything we tried was "wheel-chair friendly", of course she did not try Space Mountain or even Big Thunder Mountain because of her condition, but your son may be able to do some of these depending on his condition. You may want to run some of your ideas by your physician before your trip to get his/her advice. Have a great trip!!

Also, if you need more than just a wheelchair-For example, waiting in the sun would be difficult for your child, you can go to guest services and they will issue you a more specific pass that will help the cast members help you have a more enjoyable time.

Also, check out some of the posts with regard to Character meals and Character Meet & Greets. The CMs will go out of their way to help your special needs child get to meet their favorite characters. (Of course, they do pretty good with ALL kids!)

If it works into the budget, try to book a fireworks or Illuminations cruise. It's the best view of all to see the show.

TON cruise is neat too. The characters actually lean over the bridge to wave to you. Makes you feel pretty special.
