    Default Mama Mia! the Movie

    Anyone excited? Thoughts?

I'm sure Tom Hanks will do a great job with the movie and they certainly have recruited some big names as the cast.

    Meryl Streep -- Donna Sheridan
    Christine Baranski -- Tanya
    Julie Walters -- Rosie
    Amanda Seyfried -- Sophie Sheridan
    Dominic Cooper -- Sky
    Pierce Brosnan -- Sam Carmichael
    Colin Firth -- Harry Bright

I am so excited that I can't even think straight!! This is hands down my favorite "Feel Good" musical. I use this soundtrack as a mood elevator often!!

Who cares? He could just sit there and smile with everyone else signing and dancing around him!

This should be interesting, is Hollywood going to just make EVERY musical into a movie? I hope this trend dies off soon. Going to the theater to see an amazing show is always such an amazing experience ... it's sad to think that so many people won't need that now that they can just rent a dvd.

    Cool

Okay ... on one hand I'm interested because I saw MM twice on stage and I really enjoyed it both times.

But at the same time, isn't this just another example of Hollywood being completely incapable of coming up with an original idea?

I can understand why you say that, but I am so happy that they are making a movie of this musical that I love so much. It is frustrating when you love the theatre and don't have easy access to good productions. When they do a good movie version of a musical it gives us the opportunity to pop it in and enjoy it at any time. I can't tell you how many times I have watched my Rent DVD, and how I look forward to owning the new Hairspray one.

I'm torn on that, Donna, because part of me says theater is theater and movies are movies and never the 'twain shall meet.

But then again there is something to be said for bringing musical theater into the home and out to a wider audience.

I've been meaning for awhile now to try and find a DVD of Cats so DD can have the chance to see it.

I would choose live theatre everytime, Ian. But that just isn't an option when you live in the boonies. So having the movie option is nice, but you are right, it can never take the place of seeing it live.

LOL. But that is exactly how I feel. In fact, my first response to this was simply going to be "meh..." because I have to say I was underwhelmed by Mama Mia when I saw it in 2003 on Broadway. I'm not a fan of ABBA and I thought the plotline was weak. But I always try to see Colin's movies so I guess I'll have to sit through it again!

Hmm, not sure what I think. I just saw MM this year on Broadway and thought it was a fun show. Not so sure how well it will translate into film though.

Now, I kind of have to say that because I work in live theatre so I'm biased, but I think it was hard enough to pull off that story line on stage. Also, just my personal hangup, but I prefer the shows (and movies for that matter - think Footloose) to remain in their original format.

Unless there's some huge disco trend around the time the film comes out, I can't see it doing very well. Stage purists won't want to see it and the typical movie goer probably isn't into musicals.

That being said, I'll probably see it just because I'm familiar with the show. But I won't see it in theatres - it'll go in the Netflix queue.

I know quite a few "stage enthusiasts" (some of whom have already posted on this thread) who will want to see it. Just like other stage productions that have gone to film, I think there are a large number of people out there who will be intrigued enough to see it, especially given the star cast.

I am excited for this to come out! I am a closet ABBA fan and I loved the touring Mama Mia production I saw in 2005. I didn't know Meryl could sing until I saw Prarie home Companion (which I loved). When is the release date?
