Yep, over 50 lbs and you'll get charged extra for it, so be sure you know beforehand. Those extra charges can be a little hefty depending on the carrier and how much overlimit the bag is.

I am planning on buying a small hand held scale. You know the ones that you use to weigh fish you have caught, these are small and are easily stored. This way I'll know how much each bag weighs before heading to the airport.
I always think my suitcase will be overweight and it never is. I bet your suitcase won't be either

What we do is: always weigh the bag before leaving home.....if it is close I spread a few things out from that bag into our other bags, plus I pack a rolling duffle bag and if when we check in they say it is too heavy I will just move some things into that bag.
On the way home we have most of our dirty laundry in the rolling duffle and that alleviates the whole question of an overweight bag as I cannot ever seem to pack 50 pounds into the rolling duffle!
Some airlines do have a 40 lb maximum, so check the website for your carrier.
I have a "lift and carry" rule for my checked bag. I have to be able to lift it and carry it 20 feet without any problems. That's usually right around 40 lbs.!
I like the lift and carry rule! We'll have to start doing that!
I always weight it on our home scale before we leave. Our biggest bag usually is about 40 lbs. We have gotten to the airport on the way home and had to rearrange in line. WHAT A PAIN! Now we take an extra duffle, or pack everything a little lighter on the way so we can bring fun things home.
I agree... it may seem heavy, but it probably isn't

Not only does weight limit vary by carrier, but most carriers are now charging for extra bags ... you get 1 bag checked at no fee, more than 1 and it will cost you extra $$!
