OMG! Trundle Bed
We just got back from POR this past Sunday. I have to say with all the negative reviews lately I was pleasantly surprised. Housekeeping did a wonderful job on our room. No complaints and the resort was pretty. My only concern and not really complaint was that trundle bed! The first night my son slept on it he woke up with a sore neck. I kinda thought it was going to be a problem when I saw it but did not say anything to put words into his mouth. The thing kinda reminded me of a slab at the morgue. Coming home the the second night we found 2 "palmetto" bugs right outside our room. For those of us that don't live in Florida, roaches! I expect to see them after all its the climate. My thought of one scurrying under the door and crawling on my son as he slept so close to the ground was racing through my mind. I invited him to join us, which was quite a treat for him, not so good for my back, LOL. Anyone else find these beds repulsive? Don't think we will be using the trundle bed next year either.

In my family's culture, we slept on the floor, a trundle bed is 4-6 inches up from that. I'm not replused. Palmetto bugs can climb too!

No, we don't like the trundle bed either. We bring a raised air mattress that is so much more comfortable for my son. We got it at the Walmart linen dept., as we needed it in a pinch when we visited my in-laws. It was late at night and I ran out to Walmart and "presto" I found this raise air mattress. No batteries are necessary, as it is a plug-in! What a great deal, too. Now, we take it to Disney World!

My 10 year old grandson thought thet the trundle was the greatest--he had no problem sleeping on it for a week and we never had any bugs in the room. I would not hesitate to use it again.

We've only had occasion to use the trundle bed and that was a long time ago, back when Port Orleans Riverside was the Dixie Landings. Not only did we have one of 3 kids sleeping on the trundle bed, we also had 1 of them sleep on the floor.... for some reason they couldn't share a bed. Happily, we had no problems to report whatsoever, with bugs or the bed. Although I'll admit, the boys and I were (and still are) campers for years and used to sleeping outdoors on the ground, so an occasional bug would have probably gone unnoticed, my wife and daughter on the other hand would be a different story.
It's too bad you went in with low expectations because of all the negative comments. Just goes to show that you have to take all that negativity with a grain of salt. Those who complain are often much more vocal than those who don't have complaints. And I firmly believe that some folks are determined to complain even if they don't really have anything to complain about.
So, that you for letting folks hear something positive. Port Orleans Riverside is one of my favorite places. Glad you also enjoyed your stay.

I'm glad you had a good stay. I think the bad reviews would be flooded out of the discussions if everyone posted their positive experiences. I think a lot of people find one thing wrong, then search for 100 more to get something out of it.

We are going in about 50 days and staying in POR (family of 5) I keep stressing over the trundle bed. I don't know which one of my kids will sleep on it. They are 9,7 and 4. I am hoping that the 4 year old will but I think he might be to afraid of being that close to the floor. I don't know if it's possible but I thought about bringing those bed risers with me to see if I can put them under it to lift it up a bit or just bringing his favorite sheets and sleeping bag and making almost like a tent for him to sleep in.
But I am glad to hear that everything else went well. I have read a few things lately about mousekeeping!! What building where you in and how was the walk to eat, get the bus and go to the pool?

I don't think the bed risers will work. Think of a drawer on a track that how it rolls out. It's a metal base with a very thin "mattress" on it. It was not cozy in the least. The sleeping bag would probably help for comfort. The 4 year old might be a bit hesitant, the beds at this resort at so high off the ground. I am not the tallest person in the world but I had to really stretch to sit on the bed. I don't remember that at any other resort.
We had a great location. We were of course in the alligater bayou section in building 14. It was right next to the food court and the main bus stop. It was perfect. The pool was a very short walk over the bridge but it was enjoyable. The resort is really charming. I think you will like it alot.

I am really glad to read some positive reviews on the trundle. We won't be going until April but we are staying in the Alligator Bayou at POR. We will be a party of five (leaving the two younger of our five at home with grandma). My son (7) is the one who will be sleeping there but I was concerned about it after reading so many negative reviews. I feel a lot better about it now.
I do have a question though. Al the pictures I have seen of the trundle have it without sheets or anything. Does Disney make up this bed or do we need to bring something for that?

LOL - I'm glad we didn't try it, since they were trying to convince me we could use one of those rooms instead of getting two separate ones. Here were our family dynamics - me, hubby, 9 year old daughter, 13 year old daughter, and 16 year old foster son. Now, you do the math and tell me who you think would have been expected to sleep on the trundle? Hint - it sure as heck wasn't going to be my 9 year old, with only 2 other beds remaining!! The reservations desk was quite adamant that this should work...but we obviously went with 2 rooms LOL

Ugh, I wouldn't be able to stay anywhere if I saw a roach ![Sick](images/smilies/sick.gif)
I've never used a trundle...the pull-out couch was very gross and VERY uncomfortable. Next time, we are getting a 2 bedroom villa ![Thumbs Up](images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)

I knew the trundle bed was not going to be a choice for any of my boys. Also, they argue about sharing a bed, too. So the raised air mattress is a blessing in that respect. It is a life-saver when we stay at a deluxe resort, too.

Sorry, this is a little off topic...
Palmetto bugs live in Palmetto trees, so you are surrounded by them in Florida!! I certainly am not a fan of them, but it is just something you get used to living in Florida. I usually will see one or two after lots of rain.. guess they seek dry ground! Oh, and they fly, too, although their preferred method of moving is "walking". Don't worry, though, as long as you reguarly have pest control performed they are hardly seen, and I am certain Disney does that!

I'm glad to hear positives in reference to POR....it's getting some mixed reviews of late. Our kids love the trundle bed, I'm not saying they'd like it year round, but it's different and lends a camping feel to their stay.

My kids fought over the trundle bed. Thought it was kinda cool.
Besides the only other option for a family of 5 is booking another room.
