I would say "fairly well" is a good answer considering the more dramatic firework effects are above tree level.
We grab a spot on the rail of the bridge over the waterway for the closest, most direct line of sight view. You also can get a hit of the music now and then during the performance.
Probably the best view of Illuminations, outside of the park, is from the bridge that connects BWI and the BC. It's elevated and provides a good view. You won't see the ground effects due to the trees, but you will see all the aerial fireworks, the laser show and some of the lighting effects on the pavilions. You will even hear the music. For a closer look, you could move up to the Friendship dock just outside of the International Gateway.
I agree with the bridge... but get there early because a lot of people crowd there to watch the fireworks.

The bridge previously mentioned is the place where you'll be able to have the best view from the Boardwalk.
Keep in mind that you'll have a partial view.
