My thoughts EXACTLY! I defiantly think they took the washcloth with the rest of the dirty towels, the earrings are likely at the bottom of some GIANT disney washing machine!
As for the cologne bottle, I agree it's quite possible that a very diligent cleaner threw it away, I mean that does sound a bit like pushing the boundaries of his/her job but I think it's a much more likely possibility than it getting stolen. (On cruise ships, I often find the cabin stewards SO diligent that they tidy up/take away things I did not intend them to. )
I bet it also depends a lot on where he set this bottle, if it was on the bathroom vanity, well I doubt the mousekeeper when searching thru the cosmetics to toss the empties, but if he tossed it on the bed , and it bounced and landed on the floor, and only had a few drops left, I imagine I’d throw it away as the mousekeeper in that situation…

We have never had anything come up missing and have always been thrilled with mousekeeping. Years ago we were staying at Wilson World, right outside the main gate when we came back to the room I was upset at first to see that they didn't make my bed. Friends we were staying with pointed out that I had left what looked like my purse on the bed(was actually a cosmetic bag) but that the maid wouldn't touch the bed since that was on it. Our friends bed in the room was made. So even there the housekeeping was trying to be conscientious.

We always THINK something is gone...then we find it. Every time something goes mission, it's been our fault.

We love Disney mousekeeping, and have never been disappointed. We are well aware that they are uber-busy and have tough jobs and are always pleased with service. I can't see any of the staff I've met taking anything on purpose. Possibly accidentally, but I bet they are pretty good about checking things out before they toss stuff.

"It's snowing still," said Eeyore gloomily.
    "So it is."
    "And freezing."
    "Is it?"
"Yes," said Eeyore. "However," he said, brightening up a little, "we haven't had an earthquake lately."

We've never had anything stolen, but we do use our safe for money and other valuables....I'm thinking that the almost gone cologne was mistaken for cash, I mean why would someone risk a job to steal that?

10 trips and counting and nothing stolen. we leave tons of things on the table, money, jewlery, camera, food, etc... have used the safe on several occasions as well (travel docs) because i would hate to misplace them don't want a stressful departure. cologne stolen ?? seems strange not worth it.

This made me laugh. Because I'm a glass half full kind of gal and as I was reading the original post I was wondering if the friend was just the opposite - a glass half empty. When you confirmed it, I just had to giggle.

I have never had anything taken either . We always leave loose change on the tables and and never had any of it taken. The one thing I have noticed is that they use the same mousekeeping most every day so if anything was to come up missing it would be easy to know who did it. It would not be worth them losing there job over.

Yea, I think anything on a wash cloth or even an almost empty cologne bottle (depending on how "almost empty" it is) could definitely get taken away by mousekeeping. My mom had a white terry cloth swimsuit cover up that I guess looked so much like a towel that mousekeeping just scooped it up with laundry and took it away. My other thought for the jewelry was that depending on where they were on the counter mousekeeping could have put another towel on top of it while cleaning and then not noticed when they picked up both the towel and the washcloth.

At an off site hotel we had a housekeeper throw away some empty bottles we had brought from home and usually keep refilling with tea. We had just left them on the counter empty so she assumed they were for recycling. Didn't end up being a big deal for us though.

We had a new T-shirt go missing once, but we really couldn't say exactly where it went missing, I had laundered it as well and left it out to dry, first on a chair by the laundromat and I thought in the room, but I can't honestly remember so we're not sure where it went, we thought about it getting rolled in the towels or sheets and taken with the room laundry too. We have left change out and some cheaper jewellery on the table, never went missing! Important papers and larger amounts of cash always go in the safe.

I used to work for a local hotel in housekeeping and one of their very strict rules was that you NEVER threw anything out, even if it looked like garbage ie. a tissue on the floor, unless it was in the garbage! because you never knew. I agree about the wash cloth theory, they probably just grabbed it as a soiled item and threw it in with the laundry. When I'm at DW, I borrow one of the food trays from the food court, and put it on the suitcase stand and put my toiletries on it. It gets everything off the vanity so they can clean up easier, it's all in one place for me to find, and they never have to touch it, so I don't worry about them mistaking anything for garbage.

Never had anything go missing from our room either and this last trip we had plenty to tempt including 3 laptops, several iPods, and my GPS system as well as our Jeep keys - not too hard to figure out which car in the lot is ours when the keys say Jeep and it's a small lot with said Jeep parked right in front of the room. While I usually do keep valuables out of sight, we were quite lax this last time.
