Best Family Hotel in NYC? Near Midtown
Any suggestions? Going to do a weekend in NYC in April with our 2 boys (8 and 7). Although this is going to sound ridiculous, our main goal this visit is to visit FAO Schwarz (our son is currently perseverating on the floor piano after seeing Big on t.v.). Also, Dylan's Candy Bar is on the agenda after our younger son saw it on the Travel Channel. I really should turn off the TV...
Anyway, also interested in visiting Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, and Top of the Rock (observation deck).
We will only be there 2 nights, arriving by car Saturday afternoon, leaving Monday mid morning.
Where would you stay? Need either walking distance to the above places or easy subway access. Need rooms that sleep 4 and a place with an in room air conditioner (with a thermostat that can be controlled---apparently, NOT a given in NYC hotels from stuff I've read on Trip Advisor).

Last year we got a fabulous rate including breakfast and parking at the Hampton Inn on 8th. So close to everything. Not fancy diggs, but sure convenient and clean and close to everything. We walked or used the subway to get around to all of those places, as well as going out to Brooklyn to visit friends. Two thumbs up from us.

This is where I usually stay in NYC as well. Prices are never too bad and they have parking packages (I drive in too). I do not know how their AC works though LOL. Never noticed.
If you are going to Dylan's (3rd at 60th), think about going to Serendipty3 that is almost right next door on 60th. My kids loved it there when they were small (still do actually) and they always get the frozen hot chocolate.

Oh, and my kids always wanted to stop at the Library to see the original Winnie the Pooh animals. Somehow it became a tradition and we still do it if they are in with me. They are 26 and 23 now LOL

Yes, we are going to try to do Serendipity3. I actually have the Frozen Hot Chocolate mix at home and I love it! But, really want to stop in here for ice cream treats!
Off to check out the Hampton Inn. Thanks guys!

It looks a bit stuffy but we have had good stays at the New York Palace. It's about 3 blocks from the subway, not sure if you were looking for something closer. They have some good deals depending on how and when you book.

The Hilton New York (around 6th and 53) is in a great location for this, and the rooms are decent size for families (by NYC standards), Rockefeller Center area, which is not a bad walk up to the park or down to Times Square, but you're not in the hustle bustle of Times Square area. We've gotten it for about $220 a night depending on time of year.

UPDATE:
Just booked the Hampton! Thanks for the suggestion! We will be going over Memorial Day weekend, because it's significantly cheaper then than the weekend in April we were looking at. Who knew? Plus, I heard a lot of the city leaves for the beaches on that weekend so it's less crowded. Here's hoping! Thanks again...looks like a great home base for us!

100% agree! Love the New York Palace! We always get a good deal for our stays there. One of our favorite things to do is pick up food at Carnegie Deli (it is hard to navigate the restaurant with Mom's wheelchair) and having a picnic in the room. Room service brings up plates and bowls for us and we have a great time!
