All US Virgin store will be closed by the end of June and the last day of operation of the Downtown Disney store has been reported ( and by Disney as well) as May 31.

I was there two days ago. It's still open but the store is closing there are signs all over the store advertising "store closing discounts". By the way this is ridiculous because they are selling regular DVD's that should cost about $20 for $30 and offering 20% off. Some deal!

I agree. I was in the Virgin Megastore in Times Square a couple of months ago. When my group saw the going out of business signs along with the "SALE!" signs, we thought we might get some deals. The CD I wanted to get was still less expensive on Amazon.
Like Circuit City when that place closed, they really don't offer good deals because the items will be returned and they will get their money back. So, why should they discount deeply when they will get more money if they just wait.
At least most people now are seeing through this illusion and stores can't get away with it blindly like they previously did.
Obviously, none of us purchased anything in Virgin that night.

Sounds like an old liquidator's trick. Liquidators are not the store owners but a company that is hired to get rid of the stock.
A standard trick is to go into the store, mark everything at list price (which is usually higher than retail) and then give the initial discount as 20% off of that. That way they can almost get retail if not retail price while appearing to give a deal. As the liquidation goes on they will make the percentages higher (still off list) if necessary.
So you are right, if this is what is happening (and its a pretty standard and legal practice), there won't be real deals until nearly the very end. But then the stock wil be mostly gone anyway.
