So, What Is a Dining Plan?

Think of our dining plans as a way to say hello to delicious eats and goodbye to on-the-spot budgeting for food. We have two options, the Quick Service Dining Plan and the Dining Plan, which include a certain number of meals and snacks based on the number of nights you stay. You purchase the dining plan as part of a vacation package before your trip, so when you’re on vacation, you can enjoy your meals with your loved ones without looking at the price tags. Like before, the dining plan included in this offer depends on the Disney Resort hotel you choose.

We compiled tips and little-known facts to help you make the most of your dining plan. Check them out!

I assume this will hold the same stipulations as the offer(s) from the last few years – Deluxe/DVC get the ‘Standard’ DDP and Moderate/Value get the ‘Quick Service’ DDP?

I don’t do Summer trips to WDW or Florida in general, but always liked not having to worry about budgeting for meals when visiting. Yes, I know you pay full price for your resort to get this, but it can still be a money saver for a booking of 2 or more people. [Now here come the ‘beat downs’ on my opinion. LOL]

I have tried the DDP twice, and both times I tracked it METICULOUSLY to compare my package cost (or the opportunity  cost of using free DDP versus a % off deal) versus posted menu cost paying out of pocket.  Both times I was within $30+/- of it being a tie.  I think it’s fine if the budgeting aspect appeals to you, but my only problem was that my family didn’t always eat consistently in a way that guaranteed we didn’t leave credits unused.  That created stress for me, as I was NOT about to give Disney a freebie!  But if they gave it to me for free I complain very little!

I’m personally not a huge fan of the dining plan but know people love it. I think it all depends on what and how you eat. I’m always on the go and do quick serve too much. Don’t think I’d see the value others might.

I agree that the “Standard" DDP is a bit much – both in quantity and in time consumption, but the “Quick Service" DDP suits my visiting style to a ‘T.’ Fewer reservations and I can time meals out as I desire. As you said, it all comes down to what and how you eat while on vacation.

We’ve been solid “free" dining plan people for years. However, it really does come down to how you eat while on vacation. Our last couple of trips had the “free" dining gift card instead of the dining plan, and I much preferred it. I like the prepaid feeling and a bit of savings, but we found we shared meals and snacks so much more without the dining plan, since that is what we were really hungry for.
Still, with the cost of Disney going up so quickly, I’ll take anything that helps save a few dollars.
