According to the Orlando Sentinel, a 7-year-old child drowned on Tuesday evening in a pool at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort. It was not immediately clear which one of the three pools the child drowned in.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported that the child was found in the pool shortly before 8 p.m. ET. A short time later, the child, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Not a lot of details are known at this time, but deputies did report that the child was visiting from out of town with his family. At some point, the young boy got separated from his parents and they began a search to find him.

After a little while, the child was discovered underwater in the pool.

UPDATE: Child was actually three years old, not seven.

I feel awful, not sure how this could of happened. Are there no lifeguards? Shouldn't the parents keep a closer eye? Anyway, my condolences to the family.

Not really the time to raise questions with so little known. Drowning happens so quickly and is actually very quiet. Just a tragic thing for the family and my heart goes out to them. I can't even imagine what they are going through now and emotions they'll have to live with. Prayers and wishes of comfort to them.

This is why we taught our two boys how to swim before they could walk. When my wife was an infant, her 3-year old sister drowned in a lake near the family cottage. Just slipped away from the adults and was gone before anybody knew it. Her family never stopped being tormented by guilt, but every new baby that comes along has since learned to swim before they can walk. So sad to lose a child so young and innocent.

My God, what a sad story. We are here at the Boardwalk now & we were commenting just last night how seriously the lifeguards take their jobs.

Will think healing thoughts for that family.

My thoughts go out to the family. Such a tragedy. They are from new york from what i heard on the radio. Disney pools are so busy i can see how such a horrible accident can happen.

Do all the pools at the art of animation have a lifeguard?

What a tragedy, my heart goes out to the family. I was at the Beach Club last week. The SAB pool had so many lifeguards, but the quite pool none. One area the lifeguard kept pacing back and forth to see that particular area.

What a tragic thing to happen! Having been a lifeguard in my younger years, I know how easy it can be to lose sight of a little one, even for just a few minutes. I have also been a swimming instructor for infants and their parents and I agree, always best to teach basic swimming and safety skills when very young. Many programs will start at 6 months of age.

How horrible, I can't even begin to imagine how they are feeling. Such a tragedy.

I fall into the "learn to swim while you learn to walk" group as well, but even then, even a strong swimmer can run into trouble. I am surprised though, the lifeguards at Disney appear to be so careful and cautious, but in a busy pool, it is easy to miss someone.

Very sad indeed. This apparently happened at the Big Blue Pool (main pool), shortly before 8pm. There were lifeguards on duty.

I feel terrible for these parents. Children are very quick, and you can lose sight of them literally in the blink of an eye, especially at a busy place. So tragic. My heart goes out to the family.

Such a terrible tragedy!! One goes to Disney World to have an enjoyable vacation - so sad that they have suffered this instead!!

Drownings do happen very quickly. As vigilent as lifeguards try to be, it is very possible for a drowning to occur with a lifeguard right there. I imagine that any lifeguard on duty at the time is also suffering at this time as well.
