So is it almost mandatory or a good employee practice to bank personally where you work? Not necessarily the same branch, but the same company.

Used to be required but most institutions in the last 10 years have steered away from requirement. There is the convenience of having an ATM handy at work or having first hand experience with the interface platforms that your clients have to use so you can help them if they need you to. But you do potentially lose some privacy and if you are not good at balancing your checkbook, issues can lead to termination.
