So, I'm sitting here mildly stunned because I've just written checks to pay off our remaining car loan and all of our credit card debt. And..... drum roll please... we are not left completely broke!
We've been doing a lot of financial planning recently, it's been a little stressful, but the results have been worth it. I'm just going to admit up front that I resent having to actively participate in grown up decisions.
At the end of last year we refinanced our home loan, came down 2% and cut 5 years off the end. Increased our insurance coverage. Got our estate planning done, and rolled over our retirement fund to a really good financial planner.
We are not going to get our big southwest vacation this year, but we may get a small one closer to home. Maybe.
To balance all this responsible behavior out, I just made a couple of completely frivolous purchases. Because, you know, something inside me felt the urge to fight back against all the responsibility.

Good job. Getting out of debt is pretty nice and makes life a lot less stressful.
I paid the house off 10 years ago, quit financing cars 10 years ago and just pay cash, and just use credit cards for the convenience and cash back rewards and pay them in full every month. I haven't had any debt since my mid 30's and don't plan on having any ever again.
Thanks everyone! We're feeling the pinch as we're trying to figure out what yard/house projects will fit into this year's budget. But, still so worth it. I almost don't quite believe it yet.
