Monsters, Inc. Land Announced for Hollywood Studios

It’s laughter they’re after when a brand-new land themed around Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.” comes to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort.

The news was shared during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, with a little help from Disney Legend Billy Crystal, took to the stage to reveal plans to build a living, breathing, and not-at-all-scary Monsters-inspired area where you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters.

Picking up after the events of Pixar Animation Studios’ beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly. But it’s not a true visit without the factory itself. You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!

Yes, a door. If you’ve been dreaming of riding through the door vault since the movie was released in 2001, you’re not alone — Josh has been thinking about this, too.  “The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” he told the crowd. “You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”

The coaster will put you right in the middle of the monster action. Just be sure to fill out your paperwork! Roz is always watching…

Work on the project is slated to begin next year, so get ready to ROAR with laughter!

This totally looks amazing! Definitely looking forward to this. They were suspiciously vague though about WHERE in DHS this is going to be…Muppet fans are getting in a tizzy!

After the model was made public, um, it fits into the Muppet Theater. But, still don’t think this Monster’s land is going there. I believe Animation Courtyard is still marked for this area. Launch Bay, Playhouse Disney, the animation studios and offices behind Launch Bay, along with maybe the parking garage could all go.
However, rumors making the rounds, the Rock N Roller Coaster building actually becoming the ride building. Close the current area and queues, and reverse the entrance. Even eating up the Racing Academy along with it.

Not looking good for Muppet Courtyard. At least as of right now.

Saw a rumour today that said nothing has actually been decided as far as where this will go… crazy!

I’m starting to now feel like it is Muppets. Why not just announce Animation Courtyard? Who will miss it? No one. But they know people will miss Muppets. And with a little bit of an uproar losing ROA and Tom Sawyer Island, I believe Disney held the news until either next week or a dump on late Friday afternoon.
Also, seems there may be some infighting going on about location. Oh Disney, how you tease us so.

Hearing Disney will make the announcement of location by end of August. Why do I sense a late Friday afternoon news dump on August 30th? Just tell us already!!!!!!!!!!! :!:

Hoping for a better placement than the deleting of the rivers of America went.  To @ian’s point on the podcast – we aren’t barely netting new capacity when you get rid of attractions to build new ones.  There is land and empty space to expand into…. Animation Courtyard is the logical place – which probably means they will kill Muppets.  SMH.

New rumor… employees in the offices behind Animation Courtyard were told they will soon have to vacate their offices leading to speculation Momsters Inc will in fact go to Animation Courtyard.
I’m done lol. Just going to wait til Disney actually starts construction on Monsters. My head is spinning too much with this nonsense.

My bet is still for Animation Courtyard.  They would be crazy to bulldoze Muppets when it eats up so many people on a crowded day.  Can’t say the same for the Animation area.

MuppetVision 3D seems to have been removed from the attraction offerings for DHS Extended Evening Hours. Muppets were on the original list of offerings, and now, it’s not. Is this related to Monsters inc?

    I can’t see this as being related…

I agree. Just funny timing, especially since they listed the attraction as an offering originally. Now, it isn’t. I believe it to be more about cost than removing it.

A mischievous ploy to create panic in Muppets fans and cause them to book an emergency trip to see it “one last time"? Wink

Buy those over priced Muppets pins.

Happened to be in the parks D23 Weekend and made one final MuppetVision show the day after just in case. As fate had it, I caught the entire preshow to boot, so if this was my last MuppetVision, as least I saw it from beginning to end one last time.

At the same time though, it baffles me why Muppets would be on the block when there’s bigger and arguably more underused pieces of real estate in the park such as Indy/Backlot Express or Animation Courtyard/Launch Bay.

Agree – there is enough space to do what they want to without killing the Muppets…

Was at Disney World last week, and went to DHS on Thursday. Took a walk through Star Wars Launch Bay, and man, was it in a sad state. No one was in the building except to meet the characters. Feels like some of the props have been removed as well. Close it. Put Monsters here, which is where I now believe it will go.
Over by Muppets, remove Studio One store, maybe even the no longer in se Christmas store, and take the spinner from Dinoland and retheme it to the Muppets and add it there. It fits, even if they need to expand out into the parking lot a little. Turn Mam Melrose into a Swedish Chef restaurant, and I don’t know, expand even further backstage and build the Great Muppet Movie Ride where the Muppets are placed in scene from some of Disney’s greatest movies. But that would require imagination and spending money.

This is getting tiresome, but apparently they have decided on location. Animation Courtyard will be the spot. Not sure when they will announced. They should have already done so, but there has been a lot of internal fighting. Mostly, execs who refused to give up their cushy office in the animation building.
Let’s add a rumor to this…. Since the land is going to be larger than needed (Muppets Courtyard WAS the place this was going originally and is a smaller footprint), two rides may be added along with the playground and a show. This isn’t confirmed at all, especially since they haven’t even announced the location yet.
Wondering if they would do a Mike and Sully to the Rescue clone or another ride, something original, if a 2nd ride does indeed come.

Absolutely. When I was there beginning of September, Launch Bay was sad. Animation Courtyard was empty. Even the character lines by Disney Jr were small. The Star Wars character wait times were 30 minutes though. But those are easily moved.

Can anyone confirm Disney conducting balloon height site line testing over by Muppets some time this week?
