Has anyone done this? Is it worth the money? Is it any different (other than being dark) than the regular safari ride?

Yes! It is awesome! You don't ever leave AKL, but it feels like you're out in the wild. They give you night vision goggles, and you are close enough to the animals that you could (but don't) touch them. We saw so many up close, and the guide was great, we learned a lot and the time seemed to fly by. It is a small group, so a very personal experience, and one that I would do again.
