I have some ADRs for next week. Our party of eight turned into a party of six due to a death in the family. Should I modify those ADRs or would that be like playing with snakes?

There is no such thing as "modifying" ADRs with Disney's computer system, your only option would be to cancel and rebook. As such, leave well enough alone would be my advise.
