While perusing the Intercot boards I'm seeing ads for Disney Vacation Accounts. I hadn't previously heard this announced by Disney. How long has this been around? It seems like a neat concept to keep a family on track for their Disney vacation while not going into debt. However it doesn't look like it pays any interest, just a $20 gift card for every $1k you set aside.

It has been around for a bit now, and I've heard almost nothing but issues with it. I haven't tried it myself, because of the reports I've heard, and it might be easier/better just to use a regular savings account ... although I know they don't pay much interest either.

We set one up earlier this year, but then found that a Capital One 360 online savings account earned better interest (only 2% with the gift card/$1000 Disney deal), and you could save as much as you want.
I think the Disney savings account only allowed you to save something like $500 more than the cost of your room or package (depending on how you book your trips). That didn't work for us because we wanted to save for everything (AP's, room, TiW card, Memory Maker, shopping, food, MVMCP tickets). The Cap1 360 account automatically let you set up a debit account and get a debit card for it. This way we could easily transfer money into the debit account and buy things early like our AP's, room deposits, MVMCP tickets and Memory Maker. It's easy, too. You decide how much you want to save up by a certain date, and it tells you how much you need to stick away weekly. Plus, you don't have to transfer any money out into a bank account which can sometimes take time (or potentially have a hiccup). With the debit card, all of your money is ready the moment you transfer it from the savings account into the debit account. Instant gratification!! Super easy even on a smart phone.
