The last time we went to Illuminations, we got VIP seating and it was great. I don't want to use one of our 3 FPs on it, but is it possible to use your 3 and then get one later in the day for it?

You can try but it is not always available
We used a fastpass for Illuminations once and we are not likely to do it again. We found we still needed to be in the assigned area super early in order to get a spot where you could really see it. By time Illuminations started, folks were 10-12 deep along the water side fence area. On our last trip, we just found a spot along the fence and probably waited about the same length of time as we did when we had a fastpass for it.

My experience is that the firework/ Nighttime entertainment are the only FP left when I use my original 3 FP. Although, because my wife is a teacher we are only able to go to Disney during the peak seasons.
