This may be a silly question but can you upgrade a length of stay pass to a season pass? Is it worth it financially?

We are going for 10 days in Dec and I was wondering about this since I have heard people say that you pay for your season ticket after you go 10 days.

Generally speaking, you can upgrade to an AP as long as the upgrade costs more than your multi-day ticket. Disney doesn't willingly give back money.

It used to be that a 10 day ticket was pretty much the same price as an AP but no more. The current cost of a 10 day PH is $548.48 and an AP is $829.64 (AP is less for FL res and DVC).

The annual pass does include the photo pass so that will save you money if you usually purchase that. It's worth it if you bounce back within a year.
