I have searched the forums for any information on the impending refurbishment of the Great Movie Ride...I found no mention of this anywhere!
My understanding of this project is that Disney has entered a deal with TCM to refurbish the ride and queue area in spring of 2015. In exchange, Disney will be providing TCM rights to broadcast several classic Disney films as well as selected episodes of the Wonderful World of Color! Is this a classic win-win situation for all of us Disney fans or what! The Great Movie Ride has needed an update for a long time but especially now that it has been restored to its original status as the parks major icon (now that that the horrible hat is gone)!

I have not seen anything on a "closure related" rehab of TGMR.

As far as the TCM deal, that could simply be changing the pre-show and post-show movie collages shown on the screens. This would not take a closure at all, but simply swapping out video.

I am sure that somewhere in the near future there will be a closure type rehab where some of the scenes within the ride may be updated or changed, but nothing has been announced - that I am aware of - at this time.

Having never been to the park when the hat WASN'T there, I can't say that I share your disgust for it. I will see what the difference is when I visit at the end of April.....

It was discussed on these message boards at the time the announcement was made (late Dec or early Jan??).

I don't recall that the ride itself is changing. My understanding was that Robert Osborne, who hosts TCM, was going to be doing some kind of introduction. My understanding was that the opening movie segment and the final movie segments would be updated, but that the ride itself would remain unchanged. Maybe that has since changed.

I think in addition to what you mentioned, TCM was going to get sponsorship branding on the outside of the theater, probably another reason why the Hat had to go, you don't block a sponsors branding.

Looking at Disney's website, it appears that ToT is being used now as the Park's icon, not Grauman's.

This was reported by the Bright House channel 13 news outlet in Orlando in late November of last year;

"TCM, Disney team to make over Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios

LAKE BUENA VISTA --

The Great Movie Ride will get a classic makeover.

Cable channel Turner Classic Movies announced Wednesday it will refurbish the ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

In the deal, TCM receives the rights to air classic Disney programming, including cartoons, documentaries and TV shows, such as Pollyanna, The Three Caballeros, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and special episodes from Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color.
The ride will receive a TCM-curated refresh of the pre-show and finale.
The update is set to launch by spring 2015. GMR is one of the first rides to open at the theme park, then called Disney-MGM Studios, back in 1989."

As far as the hat goes, I didn't mean to imply that it was "disgusting" I only meant that it obscured an otherwise spectacular view down Hollywood Boulevard towards the Chinese theatre, which is much more appropriate to the theming of the park. I think you will be pleased with the restored view!

TCM had nothing to do with the hat going.. The hat removal has been planned for several years before the deal was made...

While the headlines from the article make it seem like it's a full refurb, the fine print states it is not.

The ride will receive a TCM-curated refresh of the pre-show and finale.

I would guess that the majority of this change will be done behind the scenes; i.e., film editing, and when it's ready they will slip the film into the rotation. :mickey:
