Looks like we can look forward to longer lines at POTC in Disneyland in a couple of weeks. :(

There's no hidden danger if you keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times. I don't think they will release what the cause was. The only reason we found out about the monorail was because the NTSB got involved.

They just replaced all the boats on PoTC not that long ago (a fact I'm surprised has been largely overlooked in this thread).

Given the pathetic state of management at WDW, I find it completely plausible that they overlooked some aspect of the installation of the new boats that resulted in this accident.

Since they've suddenly decided not to put people in the last row, that strongly indicates to me that something was wrong.

I understand your point, Ian, but that still doesn't explain how, if hands and feet are kept inside the boats at all times, anything could happen.

When I ride those rides, or any rides like that, I am either lightly holding the hand holds or they are in my lap if it is a sedate ride like this.

The "only" thing I can imagine is they are sitting in the back of the boat and the person had their arm stretched behind their ride partners.

But, when I do that, my hand is still inside the vehicle. I never reach and try to touch outside it.

So, that still begs to know where was their hand and why was it there?

I can't help but still on agree on that part. No denying that. I've been thinking about when we ride, and like a previous poster, I keep my hands in my lap, on the bar or holding my child's hand and I make sure they have their hands the same way.

Honestly, if there was no camera footage in that part, I *could* see the person fabricating about were his hand was resting. It honestly sounds like he had it down in the water and it perhaps got caught in some of the side bumper tracks.

And I'm not saying that Disney shouldn't try to stop it from happening (because we're all aware that people DO NOT listen to safety announcements), but I don't think in this case we're looking at negligence on their part.

All I can picture now is railings with netting around the edges of the boats to keep people's appendages in.
This is exactly what they did on the Jungle Cruise not too long ago, as I remember there was a similar incident with those boats as well. They added netting to the existing handrails and made it impossible to get near the potential pinch points.

Yes, more nets! They worked at Splash Mountain and Tree of Life, I'm sure they will work on PotC.

Whatever the cause of the incident, Disney would not increase queue times (by not loading an entire row of a ride vehicle) just for the sake of appearances. Ride vehicles have delivered unconscious riders to the unload station of other attractions and nothing was changed to operations. This, if nothing else, demonstrates they are concerned about the back row of the boat at this time. These are reasonable conclusions to draw from the available evidence. Anything else is speculation.

Ever get excited because you got the back row only to have a smelly person in the front row ruin it? You cant escape!!! Your trapped, you just have to sit there.... and wait..... as it drift towards the back row all in your face. And when you're 6'5, no the air doesn't smell better up there. It just means you smell all the people below you!

Maybe he had the same problem and was reaching for clean air.

Love the back seat! Especially on Thunder Mountain. But worse than being behind someone smelly ever had someone vomit in front of you? If you're lucky, they have some control over themselves and can hold it in until they get to a point where they can spit over the edge. For the unlucky tho, I shudder to think... Good thing I'm at least kind of lucky. ;)

I cannot imagine what they will do to the small world ride boats! :jaw:

I know! That's my fear! First crummy lap bars on Splash Mountain (such a buzzkill) due to tourists who refuse to stay in the boat!

I do not want to ride Pirates from within a caged boat! :(

Some more to the reasoning for blocking off the backrow.

Two local radio djs here in Tampa were poking fun at the story by having people who lost a limb call in and tell their story for free disney tickets. But they kept referring to a boy losing fingers rather than a UK tourist.

I researched it and it turns out, three months ago a 12 yr old boy cut four fingers in a similar fashion to how the UK guy did his. Some stories say the boy lost four fingers. Others said cut four. Whichever it was I guess Disney sees it as a problem now.

Little tibit of info i found...

Disney World had the most injuries from April to June, compared with Universal Orlando, which had four injuries, and SeaWorld, Wet ‘n Wild, Busch Gardens, and Legoland, which had none.

Here are the reported injuries, according to the Sentinel.

Girl, 8, lost consciousness on Magic Carpets of Aladdin.
Woman, 51, was dizzy, short of breath and nauseated at Expedition Everest-Legend of the Forbidden Mountain.
Woman, 54, had motion sickness at Epcot’s Mission: Space.
Woman, 62, hurt knee in fall at Seas with Nemo & Friends.
Woman, 64, fell and fractured her leg at the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway.
Woman, 68, with a preexisting condition felt chest tightness on the Kilimanjaro Safari.
Woman, 70, had chest pains at Epcot’s Mission: Space.
Woman, 72, with a preexisting condition passed out after leaving Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Boy, 12, lost four fingers at Pirates of the Caribbean.
Man, 44, fractured leg at Typhoon Lagoon.
Man, 58, with a preexisting condition felt nausea and tightness in his chest at Epcot’s Mission: Space.
Man, 68, got a blood clot in his leg after falling out of the Astro Orbiter.

Look at your list which was posted earlier in this thread, most of the "injuries" were happening to older people outside the ride.

Also, the person from the UK lost his fingers putting them somewhere on the ride where they didn't belong.
