When we went to WDW a few years ago and actually each time we go, we will have one morning with breakfast at Kona Cafe and then make our way to the opening of the MK.

We have always just left our car in the parking lot of the Poly and rode the monorail.

I know that there is a parking fee now to park the cars overnight in the lots. Has that policy changed the way they police those who are WDW Resort guests but park in another hotel lot?

I will say we did not have any issues with this the last few times we did this.

I'm not sure if what you are planning to do falls under this category but this is from Disney about parking:

Will Day Guests to Disney Resort Hotels be charged for parking?
Complimentary standard self-parking is available for Guests visiting Disney Resort Hotels for the day to enjoy select dining, shopping, entertainment and recreation experiences.

They will only let you into park if you have a reservation for one of the restaurants. Technically you are not suppose to leave a vehicle at the resort if you are not staying there. I know at the deluxe resorts they are now being pretty strict about it. Easier to park at the TTC and take the monorail over to the Poly and then to MK

Then you need half a pack of smokes, black sunglasses, and punch it!

I called Disney and asked: ANYbody can park at any resort to shop, look around, or eat.
If self parking at certain Resorts is getting full, you may be asked to use Valet parking. (Per Disney's website)
During holiday seasons some resort guards might get snarky. I've had that happen but they didn't, maybe couldn't, turn us away. I think when, if ever, that happens again I'll immediately call Disney to verify I'm allowed in.
I must be getting old (and cranky!).
